5.0 out of 5 stars A rare and beautiful sound. 7 April 2007
Format:Audio CD
I discovered this album by chance when I visited the Leonard Cohen website and the title track Blue Alert happened to be playing in the background. I ordered the album from the states and when it arrived I was blown away. The richness of Anjani's voice, the beauty of the minimal arrangements and the wonderful tell tell production with more than a hint of Cohen. A must have for any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars THOMAS IS A BEAUTIFUL CHANNEL FOR COHEN 25 July 2006
Format:Audio CD
Generally, I think this is a beautiful and moving collection. Hearing Anjani's spare but thoughtful arrangements behind Leonard's (or Anjani and Leonard's) words is like seeing a familiar person dressed in new clothes.

For me the best track by far is Golden Gate, as it marries a typcially Cohenesque use of effortless symbolism and understatement with an achingly poignant musical arrangement. The closing line "And nothing has failed" succeeds in being utterly simple and deeply affecting. For me, this song joins the pantheon of classics which perfectly describe the plangency of a love affair ending - it's up there with Diamonds and Rust, I think.

There are moments of startling and brilliant imagery, particularly on the title track, of playfulness (as in Thanks for the Dance, albeit of a somewhat bitter shade) and of delighted recognition (Mist and Nightingale).

The only dreary song for me is Half the Perfect World, but then I think there's at least 1 duff track on each Cohen album.

4.0 out of 5 stars The real deal 4 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
Two things came to mind when listening to this rather fine album; firstly, for all the, deserved, plaudits afforded to the likes of Diana Krall, Norah Jones and Madeline Peyroux, Anjani Thomas is the real "real deal" in terms of a jazz sound. Secondly, its debatable whether or not this album would have received quite so much hype and press if it wasn't for the Leonard Cohen connection.

Still it's not for me to dissect the why's and how's of the music press and at heart it is definately a good album. In lesser hands the formula of Anjani and her piano might deliver a boring album, but with typically interesting Cohen lyrics to work with and neat little changes of pace throughout (the sax on the title track, the guitar on Half The Perfect World, the gospel tinges of Never Got To Love You) it never becomes a chore to listen to.

Cynics will decry the definite "lounge" sound that the album carries, but those with a bit more of an open mind will find much to enjoy here. Anjani has the voice and Cohen delivers a perfect lyrical backdrop for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Trinity of Good Things... 4 Oct 2006
Format:Audio CD
The mellow jazzy-ness of this CD is not my usual listening flavor. However, in the big scheme of things, there is nothing "usual" about this CD, period.

Initially, I focused in on the lyrics which undiluted by age, are typical Cohen-inspired, genius. Not typical as in predictable, but typical as in the high standards that you come to expect with Leonard Cohen.

So the words, although sung (beautifully) by Anjani, for me have the undertones of Leonard's deep voice, subliminally speaking in the background. But in reality it is just Anjani's voice giving life to the lyrics. She seems to forget there is a microphone. It feels very intimate and honest. Her voice honors the words and the music, a trinity of things working perfectly together.

This CD can easily play 'in the background.' It is quiet and serene and pleasant listening. But you really should pay attention to the things being said, how they are being said and the beautiful backdrop of melodies supporting the works to get the full impact of this quiet, giant of a CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MARVELOUS COMBINATION 8 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a great album, not a duff track in sight. Cohen has always had great backing singers, Jennifer Warnes, Sharon Robinson & Anjani to name but three. Warnes has already recorded an album of Cohen material, Robinson should have gor equal credit fot '10 New Songs' and now this... Anjani is excellent throughout, the songs perfectly balanced between words, miusic and voice. Anyway, enough about the album, I bought it when it first came out in 2006 and only bought these re-issue for the DVD and, trust me, it is worth it. The two music videos are great and there is even a guest appearance from the great man. The 'making of..' is also very interesting. Worth buying? You bet.

3.0 out of 5 stars female cohen 28 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I wasnt sure what to expect of a singer I had never heard of but I knew had a close relationship with L.C. Her voice is well suited to Cohens style of song and she does a good job but there is definately not the ability to interpret the Cohen magic in the same way as the master himself. There is a certain "sameness" in the voice throughout all the songs which detracts from what would otherwise be an interesting and enjoyable foray into yet another aspect of Cohens work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seems like I like ersatz jazz 2 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
We drive on the left cos if you drive along the middle of the road there's going to be a smash. If this is MOTR then I hold up my hands and surrender - hey, I mainly listen to Radio 2 so that's the worthiness of my opinion shot down in one. And I watch Later with Jools Holland, on whose show Anjani appeared and I liked what I heard, it made me stop what I was doing (sitting here at my PC) and walk across to the TV and listen all the way through. I turned away from the White Stripes, so now you know my stereotype. All I can say is the girl can sing and sing good and she's booked a place in my Wish List.

Oh dear...I like Katie Melua too. I'm doomed...

5.0 out of 5 stars Super!
Best relaxation record ever. So clearly Cohen behind this. The music is brilliant and just goes so well with her voice. One of the best jazz records I ever listened to.

A lovely voice - nice and cool and relaxing and sensual. Not 5 star as there is some distortion in the louder passages.
