Book Description

Mar 1976

Blubber is a thick layer of fat that lies under the skin and over the muscles of whales . . .

When Linda innocently reads out her class project, everyone finds it funny. Linda can't help it if she's fat, but what starts as a joke leads to a sustained and cruel ritual of humiliation. Jill knows she should defend Linda, but at first she's too scared. When she eventually stands up to the bullies, she becomes their next victim - and what's worse, Linda is now on their side . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting points on bullying. 4 May 2001
By A Customer
This is yet another great book by Judy Blume. It all starts when a plump girl called Linda reads her project on the whale. Her class esp. Jill takes great fun in teasing her and calling her 'Blubber' but the tables soon turn when Jill is teased by the class and is called 'Baby Brenner' by her best fiend. This is a must read if your ever thinking about hurting someones feelings or calling them names. It shows the consequences and how you can be a bully without even knowing it. This book is a short easy read it is probably aimed between the ages of 8-11. I am 12 though and have read it many times.

When chubby Linda reads out her whale prodject she doesn't realise all the teasing was going to be done to her. When she read out her whale project everybody was sniggering. Jill joins in all the cruel and unkind teasing because she thought Linda deserved it, but Linda certainly doesn't. A BRILLIANT READ FOR 9 YEAR OLDS!

3.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking fast read 18 Feb 2007
I have to confess it's a long time since I read any Judy Blume, and I don't think I ever read Blubber before. It's good - the main character takes part in bullying one of the girls in the class (who isn't even particularly fat but just never fights back) and towards the end she finds that she's now the one being bullied. From a writer's point of view it was really interesting to see how the main character was portrayed - it's very difficult to write from the point of view of a bully because you don't want your readers to hate her so much that they put the book down. I thought it was briliantly handled until the last few chapters, when the attention is turned to a new victim. This seemed to fizzle out rather quickly, and the main character didn't have any kind of realisation of how nasty she had been in the past. Maybe I'm being naive, but I'd have liked her to have some kind of moment when she realised that 'what goes around, comes around' and all of that.

It's a fast read though and suitable for children at the middle/top end of primary school. I should think too that it would provoke a lot of discussion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review about Blubber from a 10 year old girl 12 Feb 2012
I loved this book but can't believe how mean they were to her.
It made me feel worried about going to high school and that people might be mean to me.
I am glad I read it because in the book it says a girl who can laugh off the mean comments will earn respect.
I would recommend this book to 10 to 11 year olds and maybe talk about it with your mum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making Fun Of Linda 9 Aug 2010
A Kid's Review
When shy, chubby looking Linda reads out her report on whales and tells the class that the stuff inside them are called blubber, Wendy, the most popular girl in the school says that is what her new nickname would be. Blubber. Linda tries to ignore everyone but then later in the book, she tries to stand up for herself as Jill Brenner goes along with all the name calling and cruel remarks.
Another good book from Judy Blume and very well written too. I'd give it five stars because it was very interesting and I couldn't put it down.
Before I purchased it, I thought Jill was going to be the popular one of the whole school after I read the blurb.

3.0 out of 5 stars worth a look 8 July 2000
By A Customer
A story about a girl who starts to get friendly with the class bully and joins in namecalling the class outcast but finds that it isn't so nice when the tables are turned . . . a good moral is woven into the storyline
