I've enjoyed the Pearce books. Sometimes the author maybe tries too hard to get the 18th century wordplay right - and the first chapter or so of this one is the worst example of that. But, if you can get through the intro and the reminders of the back story then this is a good tale. Whilst not really moving the characters on (apart from the nicely handled scenes between Pearce and Emily Barclay) it does make a change to not be beating the odds against the French. _

I think he's under rated - possibly because his genre mainly caters to victorian-style heros. It's a good read. Give him a go.

I have read all the books up till this point, Sadly I don't know if I will buy another as this book had no sea faring in it at all. He spent th whole book moping after Emilie. Going on carriages up to London and back. At the end there is a bit on the boats but for a seafaring fighting sail book it didn't have any in it. Don't buy this one.

More of the same. What makes the books in this series so readable is the pacey action and the wealth of detail, truly capturing the spirit of the times in which they are set

A good Series / Serial?.......but cover pictures incorrect for warships of Nelson Era.......and the over reiteration in every subsequent book of 'The story so far' is tedious. However, I continue to buy each one as it comes out so it does have staying power!!
