Jazz virtuoso and multi-instrumental super-star James Morrison is without doubt one of Australia's best known and loved musicians. His book "Blowing My Own Trumpet" is a compilation of stories from his early childhood in Boorowa, New South Wales, where he was born, through his first musical experience playing in the Mona Vale Primary School Brass Band to stardom on the International jazz scene. His stories are both amusing and hilarious, recalling living large on a derelict sailboat in freezing New York, becoming the first-ever accidental trapeze-and-trumpet act to spraying blood over an appreciative rock audience. James Morrison's life has never had a dull moment. He's an adventurer, a qualified pilot, a keen sailor and Triathlete, all extensively covered.
This is an attractive and fascinating book (first published in 2006) containing 272 pages of mouth-watering reading with high quality photographs.
From those early days playing in the school brass band alongside brother John, he recalls eventually turning pro, to 1979 and his time with the Young Northside Big Band in Sydney and the fascinating chapter "Legends", when he recalls being the only non-American to be invited to tour with the Philip Morris Superband, an International conglomerate of jazz superstars, including the likes of Ray Brown, Harry "Sweets" Eddison, Herb Ellis, Jeff Hamilton and trombone legend Urbie Green to name a few.
If you've had the thrill of seeing James Morrison (multi-instrumentalist) live in concert, then "Blowing My Own Trumpet" is a "must have" purchase.
Highly recommended for all jazz musicians.
