Farewell Nancy was a album originally released in 1964 by Topic records. That album is presented here in this CD format with some additions and a new title. It is a collection of fine recordings from the likes of Ewan MacColl, Ian Campbell, Bob Davenport, the Watersons, A.L. Lloyd and Louis Killen.
This veresion was released on CD in 1993.
It is a collection of sea shanties and forebitters. Shanties for singing at work, Forebitters for singing at leisure.
Shanties were functional songs to get men to pull or push together. Forebitters told a story to escape from the routine of things.
These recordings not only are from established folk singers of quality, but in the case of sam larner bob Roberts and bob hart they had worked at sea for a large part of their lives and knew these songs from their own experience of using them as intended.
Modern recordings will often use ornamentation to spice up the sound but these recordings are possibly more convincing. Harry \H Corbett and chorus sing the title track (5) "Blow the man down" a song used when hoisting the yards. It is a halyard shantie and was usually very long but thankfully this is just right.
A lot of the songs mention Liverpool and the Liverpool docks and its associaton with the sea.
This is a special release and it has atmosphere and a great concept. There have been a few releases of sea shanties over the years but this is one of the oringinals, and one of the best.
