Book Description

The second novel in Simon Brett's great fun comedy crime series starring Blotto and Twinks.

Product Description

The extremely aristocratic but extremely thick Blotto and his extremely brainy sister Twinks are attending a weekend house party when the inevitable happens. Their hostess, the Dowager Duchess of Melmont, is murdered. An amateur detective, conveniently staying for the weekend, deduces that the Lyminster family chauffeur Corky Froggett must have done it. For Blotto and Twinks, the only way to prove Corky's innocence is by finding the real perpetrator. So begins the second investigation for the daring duo... one which takes them via an opium den in Limehouse, a Scottish castle and a disused Cornish tin mine, to a thrilling final confrontation at the nerve-centre of the evil League of the Crimson Hand. Yes, Blotto and Twinks are back! Praise for Simon Brett: 'A new Simon Brett is an event for mystery fans' P D James 'Murder most enjoyable' Colin Dexter 'Simon Brett writes stunning detective stories. I would recommend them to anyone.' Jilly Cooper 'Few crime writers are so enchantingly gifted' Sunday Times 'One of British crime's most assured craftsmen... Crime writing just like in the good old days, and perfect entertainment.' Guardian

Spiffing good fun! 28 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
I read the first Blotto and Twinks adventure and loved it. Pure escapism...a book to snuggle down with and forget all about recession, depression, reality. I didn't think that the second book could live up to the first but it's surpassed it. It's a heartwarming, uplifting, totally daft, highly amusing, jolly good romp that left a warm glow long after I'd turned the final page. Simon Brett's humourous observations are a delight and so are his characters. Completely over-the-top though they may be, I found myself getting rather fond of the hero and heroine. But I'm still not sure what happened to Blotto's favourite and second favourite cricket bats...

As a fan of Simon Brett's books I had high hopes of this series - this is the first of the Blotto and Twinks books that I have read - and probably the last! The first couple of chapters were amusing, but the non-stop whimsy quickly palled and by the time we got to the end irritation had firmly set in. The sub-Wodehousian lanaguage and characters would lend themselves better to a collection of short stories to dip in and out of when in the mood, plot being an entirely unnecessary adjunct to such an exercise. As it is, I shall stick to Bertie Wooster when I want this sort of froth, or Daisy Dalrymple for a light hearted send-up of the 1920s amateur country house sleuth.

Pure entertainment 6 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
I don't often read books which make me laugh quite as much as this one did. Simon Brett has created a fantasy world here, and I for one am happy to spend a while in it, with the improbably handsome but intellectually disadvantaged Blotto and his equally improbably beautiful but brilliant sister Twinks, whose detective deductions put those of Sherlock Holmes in the shade. Where else could you find somebody holding a balloon outside a railway carriage window all the way from London to Scotland? And Simon Brett's social comments are extremely amusing.

Mixed feelings ...
I am a fan of Brett's other detective fiction, generally light and amusing, also well written, and I am a Devotee of the Master. Read more

Not worth it
This is the first Simon Brett novel I have read, and I won't be reading anymore. The social commentary, which I presume was supposed to be funny, was so heavy handed that it took... Read more

Just for fun
P.G.Woodhouse meets Agatha Christie, Dorothy L.Sayers, John Buchan and Conan Doyle, etc. It's always easy to slam parody but anything with the Simon Brett pedigree is worth... Read more

I say, Old Bean, that Brett chappie has come a cropper, what?
In general I enjoy the work of Simon Brett but with Blotto, Twinks and the Dead Dowager Duchess, I am so disappointed. I found it very tongue-in-cheek, and yes, shallow. Read more

Keep it going!
The second book was as entertaining as the first. I like this overblown world of the pre-war English aristocratic sleuths! Read more
