From the moment of Ronnie Scott's introduction we are transported to the intimacy of a club atmosphere where Blossom Dearie was always at her best. Ably backed by Jeff Clyne on bass and Johnny Butts on drums, Blossom sings to her own piano accompaniment and introduces the numbers herself. She even tells a rather good joke. The songs range from Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll" to Noel Coward's "Mad about the Boy" and includes the one she made her own, David Frishberg's "I'm Hip". A gem of a record.

A great selection of songs delivered in Blossom Dearie's inimitable style and it's a nice touch that we even get to hear the voice of Ronnie Scott introducing her. These people are irreplaceable. Only problem - I like it so much I bought it twice - without realising it, of course!

Blossom Dearie- there is only one Blossom Dearie. A delightfully witty and accomplished singer and pianist, she is a one of a kind performer. She might seem fragile and tender on the surface, one of life's wallflowers, but there is more then a hint that she has reserves of humour and sheer willpower to see her through.

This is an easy album to recommend. There isn't a duff tune to be heard, the band is serviceable and the between song patter is very amusing. Of course, the lady herself turns in a lovely performance.

I particularly enjoyed the wistfully bitter-sweet feeling that she brings to her music on this album. Tracks like 'When The World Was Young' , 'When in Rome' and 'Once Upon A Summertime' have an emotional pull but there is degree of sophistication and playfulness that Blossom brings to her performance that disarms any tendency towards unseemly melodrama. Judy Garland, she is not.

Recording quality is fair and at 10 tracks, rather on the short side. My only other beef is the album finishes so abruptly and in so doing dispelling a lovely mood- shame!. Other then these minor moans, a highly enjoyable disc.

I usually will not buy live recordings. Make an exception for this one, particularly if you, like me, adore Blossom Dearie. She appeared at Scott's a number of times, and was so well received, and why not? She was extraordinary in so many ways. You can't have a Blossom collection (and I admit to having one) without this one...and the live nature? Not a problem, and in fact, the audience interaction may be helpful...buy this!

If you like Blossom Dearie's distinctive singing style you will not be disappointed by this fine live album; and the resident club bassist and drummer provide very sympathetic accompaniment

I was inspired to purchase this album after hearing a review on Jamie Cullum's Jazz pogramme on Radio 2. This is a simple, well produced live concert. The shining star is of course Blossom Dearie who engages her audience with her jazzy fingers and 'little girl lost' vocals, reminiscent of Billie Holiday. The support from accompanying musicians is also great.
