Product Description

Hollywood location scout John Pellam thought the scenic backwater town of Maddox, Missouri, would be the perfect site for an upcoming gangster film. Until real bullets leave two people dead and one cop paralysed. Pellam had unwittingly wandered onto the crime scene just moments before the brutal hits. Now the feds and local police want him to talk. Mob enforcers want him silenced. And a mysterious blonde just wants him. Trapped in a town full of sinister secrets and deadly deceptions, Pellam fears that deal will imitate art, as the film shoot - and his life - race toward a breathtakingly bloody climax.

I've read and loved Jeffrey's past work but, for some reason, I had put off actually reading this particular book for a couple of weeks after buying it.

Perhaps it was the whole "location scout cum crime-fighter" thing. Whatever the reason, when I eventually did settle down to read it (in one session) I found this book less enjoyable than others by the author and for a while I struggled to understand why I wasn't getting my usual buzz.

In the end, I think it comes down to a simple fact - Jeffrey Deaver is fantastic at writing crime novels from the perspective of a professional law enforcer, he's on shakier ground when viewing it from the viewpoint of an 'innocent bystander'.

The pace is slower, the plot twists are so far from left-field that you would need to be a clairvoyant to see them coming and they don't really seem believable or well integrated into the central plot.

Nonetheless a good read, but not a great one - not one of Jeffrey's best.

Jeffrey Deaver has produced some of the best thrillers of the past decade, and nothing can take away from that fact. However, his recent "Location Scout" novels give the impression of books that he perhaps had more difficulty in getting published before he wrote "The Bone Collector" - or his publisher demanded something on short notice! OK this may be a bit unfair, but they lack the polish of some of his heavier novels. It is fair to say that these are enjoyable and easy to read - but they also lack the depth and complexity of his more well known works. I was therefore slighty disappointed with this series, but Bloody River Blues is definitely better than the previous efforts.
For a good effortless read I'd recommend it, but afficionados of Deaver shouldn't expect to be challenged by plot or characters. As ever, the story and dialogue are tight and fast paced, but it is difficult to develop a genuine liking for any of the characters. Still, the series is getting better and better, and I look forward to the next one.

I have been working my way through the Lincoln Rhyme series and very much enjoying his dectective crime thrillers. Bloody River Blues is a bit different with the main character being a film location scout who witnesses a murder. His life is made a misery from both the murder and law enforcement agencies. There are a few twists along the way and some of the characters are quite strong. However, this didn't have me gripped the same way that a Lincoln Rhyme novel has in the past.
