3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bloody Bad, 14 Feb 2004
This review is from: Bloody Birthday [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Cheap and not really THAT nasty, this not a bad horror flick.

The evil kids in it are genuinely creepy and acting is enthusiastic if not always great.

I've sat through a lot worse. As with most early 80's horror there's some oversexed teens and of course the usual script silliness. The adults aren't particularly bright and direction could have been better but hey with that title and a cast which includes Jose Ferrer and Michael Dudikoff, you're not looking at Oscar-winning material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody birthday is bloody good!, 28 Jun 2004

A lot of people seem to write off this film. Why? What's wrong with it?

Brilliant actors. Brilliant story line. a lot of nudity. a lot of people killed off.

Bloody good!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Awful, 10 Feb 2008
By Lain "Lain" (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
Despite the other reviews, Bloody Birthday is a totally rubbish horror/slasher movie from beginning to end. I'm not sure what the other reviewers are getting excited about, but you really can't compare this trash to the likes of Halloween, Black Christmas, Nightmare on Elm St et al.

I found the acting to be pretty good considering the genre of movie and its obvious low budget. I don't know what was going on with the cinematography but it looked ghastly. Way too over-saturated. The picture quality was poor. Maybe this is a bad transfer to DVD or maybe it always looked like that, I don't know.

There really are no redeeming qualities to speak of. The nudity that other reviews mention consists mainly of a silly strip tease done by one of the teens. It's not erotic in the slightest but is made even less so by the fact she is spied on through a peep-hole by her 10 year old sister and two 10 year old boys. On top of that, the 10 year old girl's skirt is shockingly short and there are a couple of dodgy low-angle shots while she is standing on a balcony that might have you question the integrity of the director.
There are quite a few deaths in this but they aren't really gory. They are cheap 70's horror movie style deaths with little or no blood.

I wouldn't bother with it if I was you. The best thing about the DVD was the 15 minute interview with producer Max Rosenberg who was very amusing and honest. He didn't have anything good to say about director Ed Hunt and admits the movie was a failure, but he would like to re-make it as he believes it has a decent plot. However, he died in 2004 so I guess it will be up to someone else to take on that challenge. With the way things have been going in the last few years it wouldn't surprise me, there's at least one re-make per week at the cinema these days. It couldn't be any worse than the original I suppose but I couldn't care less whether it got re-made or not.
