Synopsis
This action-horror film is set in ancient Romania and stars Kristianna Loken (TERMINATOR 3) as Rayne, a half-human/half-vampire sworn to kill her evil tyrant vampire father (Ben Kingsley). Michael Madsen, Michelle Rodriguez, and Matthew Davis play a trio of vampire hunters who ally themselves with Rayne. Based on a video game, this film offers a lot more blood, gore, and nudity--and less CGI effects--than most of its modern vamp contemporaries. With all its swords, chained breasts, gushing arteries, and severed heads, BLOODRAYNE seems more like a welcome throwback to early 1980s sword and sorcery films. In between the slashing and gouging there are torch-lit castles, nefarious booby traps, blurry flashbacks, and aerial camera shots that swoop down through the gorgeous Carpathian landscapes. There's a number of name actors in bit parts, including Meat Loaf (as a vamp surrounded by nubile naked concubines), Geraldine Chaplin (as a fortune teller), and--clearly having the most fun--Billy Zane as a bored vampire king plotting to take over the kingdom. BLOODRAYNE is directed by Uwe Boll, the man who gave us the video game adaptations of HOUSE OF THE DEAD and ALONE IN THE DARK.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slashingly fine stuff, 18 Jul 2008
This is great entertainment. There's a good cast, a lot of vampires to slice up and a great looking woman leading the way. I don't know why Uwe Boll gets dumped on so much by the gamer geek community. I enjoyed this hugely and it has all the right ingredients and does them right. Great fun.

Really entertaining film. Lots of action and a good story without the need for a hollywood budget. Excellent old school fantasy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining shlock film with a few problems., 9 Jul 2008

This movie would be fantastic if it made a little more sense. First off, fans of the game will be disappointed by the shift of setting to a completely different time and place (Supposedly to build up to the 3rd movie which is, indeed, to be set in World War II Germany), but people who never did follow the games - like myself - will have difficulty understanding the plot and Rayne's motives as it never outright explains itself. We never really learn quite why Rayne wants to kill the vampire king until later on in the film, so it can be hard to care if she does or not, and it's not really shown how she knows to retrieve these artifacts which 'upgrade' her body so it can be confusing as to why she's going through these obstacle courses to obtain them.

Aside from this, Kristanna Loken's badly faked accent, and a few tacky gore effects (for something made in 2005, a few of the deaths looked very 70s), Bloodrayne proves to be extremely entertaining, with sexy vampires kicking, slicing and biting, blood spurting in every direction at all times. Those of you who had that secret urge to see blood, guts and breasts in Buffy will be satisfied by this.

The thing I enjoyed the most about the film, though, was it's videogame structure. Whilst the movie changes the fundamentals of Bloodrayne's story, it's probably the most videogame-spirited game adaptation we'll see for a long time. Rayne fights 'bosses' and guardians, finds keys and artifacts to open doors, navigates obstacle courses and deadly traps and collects artifacts which 'upgrade' her to give her new abilities. Very cool.

Give it a try. Forget the name of the director plastered on the front of the disks and the way the internet likes to lambast him and check out a really entertaining film that'll give you flashbacks to the 80s when we just had fun in our movies.
