The second book in the series, following on from the equally brilliant Darkland. More factional intrigue, wars and assassinations. The plot moves along swiftly and the mix of magic and cyberpunk technology has never worked better. Realistic (and cool) female (and male) characters, clashing ideologies and thrilling adventure make for top quality feminist science fiction. The converging plot lines are fascinating and handled brilliantly by Liz Williams. You will love this book.

This book follows straight on from its predecessor, Darkland, so if you haven't read that, Bloodmind will not made a lot of sense to you.

It develops the concepts and story from Darkland, interweaving three separate strands from the 3 planets of Mondhile, Nhem and Muspell.

The main voice remains Vali Hallsdottir, though new characters from Mondheim and Nhem are also introduced. As the story develops, it becomes clearer what Frey and the vitki were planning.

As I said in my review for Darkland, it's an good adventure novel along the lines of Andre Norton, that mixes 'magic' with genetic modification and space opera. My only slight criticism is that the ending felt rushed, as if she wanted to tie-up all the threads without having to write another sequel.

Good stuff, I hope she does get round to writing another in this series

I read Darkland, the first book of this series and loved it.
It dealt with dark material and a fantastic main character and I hoped this second book would follow in the same manner. Unfortunately I don't think it lived up to it's predecessor, instead of concentrating and developing the main female character the book introduces several characters who seem to have no history or charisma. The author seems to have tried to write a space opera spanning three worlds unfortunately it seemed to fall short. The whole effect diluted the story, it was an OK read but not a patch on Darkland.
