By The CinemaScope Cat TOP 500 REVIEWER

After her father is killed in a mountain climbing accident, his daughter (Audrey Hepburn) inherits control of his multi million dollar empire. Despite her inexperience, she refuses to listen to the other family members (who also own stock in the company) to sell shares on the open market. Shortly after a police detective (Gert Frobe, GOLDFINGER) informs her that her father was actually murdered, attempts on her life begin. Based on the Sidney Sheldon best selling potboiler and directed by Terence Young, who had previously directed Hepburn in the superior thriller WAIT UNTIL DARK, this feeble attempt at an international thriller arrives D.O.A. There's not an iota of genuine suspense in the film. Hepburn looks lovely, she aged very well and there's a strong supporting cast but to no avail. No amount of talent seems able to breathe life into it, not even with normally reliable cinematographer Freddie Young behind the camera and it doesn't help that the tired score by Ennio Morricone is just a re-hash of previous material. There's also a snuff movie subplot that makes no sense in the finished film (it's explained in the novel). The large supporting cast includes James Mason, Omar Sharif, Romy Schneider, Ben Gazzara, Irene Papas, Maurice Ronet, Beatrice Straight, Michelle Phillips and Marcel Bozzuffi.

The Paramount DVD from Great Britain (not available in the U.S. yet) is an above average anamorphic 1.85 transfer.

This 1979 mini-series (originally shown in two parts) is based on the book by Sidney Sheldon and has been brought up-to-date by a wonderfully clean transfer to DVD. It has many features like a choice of expertly dubbed French, German, Italian and Spanish languages and a choice of subtitles in 10 languages plus English subtitles for the hearing impaired.

What about the film itself?

The script is well written and the plot is guaranteed to keep you guessing. It is directed by Terence Young (director of the first James Bond film 'Dr. No' plus two other classic 007 films, 'From Russia With Love' and 'Thunderball'). It has a stella cast and is expertly acted. There are some nice locations, nail bitting moments, some adult themes and a musical score by Ennio Morricone (that definately went on to influence his scoring of Once Upon a Time in America). The film runs for approximately 112 entertaining minutes and for the price on offer from Amazon.co.uk could you really want anymore? With reference to the previous comment - yes I understand that bonus features like the original trailer should have been included; if it was on the previous VHS version but in defence of Paramount Home Entertainment perhaps the disk was too full because of the number of languages/subtitles included on it. In general I think the opportunity of seeing it on DVD in comparison to VHS wins over this oversight and in my view I feel not having more bonus features on the disk should not detract you from purchasing this movie.

If you're a collector of Audrey Hepburn films then this is an invaluable addition as she hardly made anything in this period of her life. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a well made suspense thriller, keep looking, this isn't it. It has all the feel of a project that ran out of money and was patched together crudely in the editing room just to get it out there and recoup some of the expense. And there would have been an expense - wonderful actors (Hepburn, Mason, Gazzara...), great locations (NYC, Paris, Austria, Istanbul.....)and a popular author (Sheldon). The plot, before it fell apart in the final quarter, centres on AH inheriting huge Pharmaceutical empire following father's tragic 'accident', her refusal to sell up and the subsequent threat to her life...........
