Yes, this is one of those page-turning books that reads almost like a historical detective story. You feel yourself peeling back the layers of history, conspiracy and legend to reveal the truth beneath.
There are two notes of caution though...
One - beware of confusing theory with fact. If you're interested in this subject, read other books as well (Jesus Mysteries, Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, Mary Magdalene - Christianity's Hidden Goddess many, many others) and balance the arguments.
Two - this isn't the easiest read. Laurence Gardner's style can be heavy and hard going. There could be lots of going back to re-read bits and remind yourself of various arguments. Patience and concentration are both must-haves!
A recommended read nonetheless.

What sets this apart from other books such as 'The Jesus Mysteries' or 'The Arcadian Cipher' is the depth of research put into the subjects. Mr Gardner adds weight to Barbara Theiring's work 'Jesus The Man' but continues on, not only providing the bloodline of Jesus/Magdelene and his borhter James (aka Joseph of Arimethea)... thorugh other 'legendary' names such as King Arthur, The Crusades, association to Rennes-le-Chateau, The line of Stuarts, Freemasonry etc... in a tour-de-fource of chronology.
One must take care to read between the line, as i found it easy to read and digest as FACT... i would suggest that for those who have an interest in these topics, that the overlap in Mr Gardner's research and that of others becomes evident in the text, but where it deviates is clearly Mr Gardner's own hypothesis.. but he puts it so well and constructs all the evidence to back it up you are compelled to believe.
So if you want to know who is heir to the royal bloodline of Christ? or if not... want to know the reasons behind the great Roman Catholic Church cover up of the 'real' Christ teachings IN EXTRAORDINARY DETAIL.. read this book.
To prime yourself, read the books mentioned above beforehand and you will see the difference in this work.

Although I am reviewing the paperbook- I purchased the old hardback around the time of it's release as I was highly interested in the subject at that time. Gardner introduces us to subjects already mentioned in prior books (which many of you will have read) and continues to discuss the usual anomalies in history etc such as the possible blood line from Jesus, an alternative history of Scotland and some interesting features in historic art. The books is an easy read like the Holy Blood, Holy Grail and The Templar revelation and will introduce the reader to the subjects now made popular by the book the Da Vinci Code.
However, it would be more appreciated if Gardner could write as much about his OWN connection to the secret groups and why he holds up this 'puppet' version of the story which contains fundamental misunderstoods. Other books have covered this subject in a more riveting manner coming to more solid conclusions. Commyns Beaumont and Barry Dunford wrote well on the subject of Scotland (though I cannot vouch for their current stance on the subject) and R.Henry (as I have cited in reviews of other books) covers the vast scope of data in a four volume set called 'Theatre Earth- Who Pulls the Strings?' which covers the role that other subjects such as Anthroposophy, Scientology and even FIFA have played in the ongoing battle for knowledge. If your a beginner this book will give you some knowledge about world events- though be sceptical about this one more that the others due to the authors connections.

Laurence Gardner doesn't distinguish between facts, argument and pure speculation. There are no argued positions in this book, no weighing of evidence and consideration of options. Read more
