Scripted by Barry Cryer (The Two Ronnies; The Kenny Everett Television Show), BLOODBATH AT THE HOUSE OF DEATH is a killer mixture of gross-out horror, shameless Carry On-style comedy and more than a little bit of kitsch zaniness. Revelling in its merciless parodies of a lengthy checklist of horror and genre movies such as Alien, The Entity, Carrie, An American Werewolf In London, Jaws and The Shining.
Never before released on DVD anywhere in the world and now remastered from the original vault negatives, BLOODBATH AT THE HOUSE OF DEATH stars a whole host of familiar faces from British film and television including influential radio DJ and comedian Kenny Everett, Pamela Stephenson (Superman III; Not The Nine OClock News), Gareth Hunt (The New Avengers), Don Warrington (Grange Hill; Rising Damp), John Fortune (Bremner, Bird and Fortune), Sheila Steafel (The Ghosts Of Motley Hall), Cleo Rocos (The Kenny Everett Television Show; Celebrity Big Brother), Graham Stark (the Pink Panther movies) and horror legend, Vincent Price.

a bloodbath of laughs & a dvd full of surprises!,
By
This review is from: Bloodbath at the House of Death [1984] [DVD] (DVD)
I have been a Kenny Everett fan for years - I remember the first time that his shows appeared on British TV & I welcomed the recent reruns on satellite TV earlier in 2008! However, I confess to never having seen Bloodbath at the house of death in the cinema or on video. Anyone expecting an array of manic characters from Kenny's TV programs will be pleasantly surprised at his restrained performance as the mad professor with a dubious background - he only goes a bit nuts when the script requires him to & any overacting is down to certain other performers! The supporting cast is full of familiar faces - Graham Stark ( `Ercule in the Clouseau movies for just one example), David Lodge, veteran of countless films, John Fortune & South African Sheila Steafel, both of whom made their names on TV and are still active today & of course the biggest bonus is the participation of the incomparable Vincent Price who adds his own brand of camp dignity to the proceedings! Pamela Stephenson, best remembered for the wonderful Not the 9 o'clock news series, speaks in a strange lisp of her own invention according to one of the interviews in the Special Features section & Kenny's very close friend & a gorgeous lady, Cleo Rocos, is around to further enhance the production!
The story has been described by other people who have written reviews on Amazon's web site but basically the movie is homage to horror films of the era & pre dates the concept of the Scary Movie series by some 20 years! Now to those special features which make this a fascinating DVD! Interviews with the executive producers provide revealing insights about the making of the film but the real gem is the archive footage consisting of a rare interview with Kenny, previously unseen by me. Surprisingly enough Bloodbath didn't do well at the box office in UK but was a hit in Australia! Hopefully this DVD release will find a new audience with awareness having been aroused by the repeats of the old TV shows that I mentioned earlier. 10 out of 10 to Nucleus films for finding a great looking print of the film - colours are crisp & sharp throughout and the night scenes are totally clear too, so collectors can now throw their old tapes away and replace with this excellent piece of nostalgic entertainment!

A group of scientists visit the infamous Headstone Manor, a place where eight years ago, 18 people were murdered. It seems, however, that the locals don't want them there. Once inside, they come under attack from silent farts and amorous ghosts....
This film is very, very silly. It also happens to be very funny, and quite ahead of its time, as it shares the humour of the Scary Movie franchise. That is, a gag a minute, some funny some not. I bet they all had a whale of a time making this film and were quite perplexed regarding the critical lambasting the film recieved. The films that are lampooned in this film are too numerous to mention, but to name a few, we have hilarious scetches based on Carrie, Legend Of Hell House, Satan's Slave and Ghost Story to name but four. A great cast is also present here, with Don Warrington and Gareth Hunt very funny as a pair of gay scientist lovers who like nothing better than perusing a copy of 'Him', Sheila Steafel plays a sexually repressed investigator with telekinetic powers, but my favourite is John Stephen Hill who plays dumb American scientist Henry just right, simply repeating sentences uttered by other characters, and stating the bleeding obvious. Very funny. Just to mention Kenny Everett, the star of the show. I loved his BBC television series, but approached this dvd with some trepidation, as I was aware of the film's bad rep. I'm so glad that the film exceeded my expectations, being very funny in parts and well made for a shoestring budget too. I'm also going to mention Vincent Price, terrific as 'The Sinister Man' having great trouble keeeping his coven in line. Finally, this wonderful dvd release by Nucleus Films must get a mention. The transfer of the film is great, a lovely crisp sound and picture, and there are plenty of extras, the best being a highly informative behind the scenes featurette. Highly entertaining. 5 out of 5 for the whole package.
