5.0 out of 5 stars A fiery translation of Lorca's 'Blood Wedding' 22 April 2001
By A Customer
'Blood Wedding' is undisputably one of the greatest plays of the last century. Unlike many post-modern pieces written during this period, Lorca uses beautiful, eloquent language which is a delight to read and flows of the tongue of anyone lucky enough to perform it. It is wonderful, then, to discover a translation which manages to retain Lorca's poetry. The play is about the unfortunate fate of a young woman who elopes with her lover on her wedding day, leaving her fiance at the altar. It is a delicate and yet passionate play, based on a true story. David Johnston's sensitive translation is fully in touch with the original text, and overcomes language barriers smoothly and efficiently. Furthermore, the text includes an extensive introduction and notes section. These will prove an incredibly useful guide to anyone studying the text in schools or universities or performing the play and will provide stimulating background reading for those who enjoy the play merely as a form of entertainment. This a scorching translation and a must for Lorca enthusiasts-or simply those who wish to be entertained.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic 25 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A short book of 85 pages and the first play I have read since I was at school. Despite or maybe because some of the descriptions and poetic action are difficult to fully comprehend in translation, it is both a simple and atmospheric tale of tragic love. The lot of the rural poor and the restrictions placed on women by tradition and the expectations of a conservative society are very stark. And finally, the bride-to-be's description of the passion which drove her to leave her husband on their wedding day for a man that she really did not want to be with, but one who she would have dropped everything for at any time to follow him to her doom, was bewitching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tragic and Poetic. 13 Aug 2013
By Pedro
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Lorca is one of the great poets of the first part of the twentieth century and 'Blood Wedding' is one of his masterpieces. I prefer 'The House of Bernada Alba' but that's just personal taste, 'Blood Wedding' is more 'difficult' in that it mixes naturalism with a kind of poetic expression of the subtext which, if the piece is to be performed, needs to be very carefully judged if it's going to work but it's a powerful moving piece.
The inevitable problem is that it it is not in Spanish. English has such a different rhythm and flavor that something is bound to be lost.
