Product Description

When ex prison governor, turned private investigator Danny Beck fails to stop a young woman jumping to her death he figures there is only one thing left to do - take her with him to join the ghosts of the other dead women that live inside him…
In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy Beck encounters the pale and enigmatic Gina, who reminds him of a prisoner whose life he failed to save. Also witness to the suicide, Gina who works in the Peep Show at the After Dark club, thinks that maybe she knew the woman who jumped.
Days later, following a shooting at the After Dark, Gina turns to Beck for help and tells him she believes she is being followed. When Gina disappears Beck is forced to begin a search for her, a search which brings him face to face with a young sniper and Iraq veteran, Aiden, a man with nothing to lose who is wedded to his rifle, and with the dark underbelly of the city of Newcastle and the world of gangster turned city benefactor Harry Munroe.
When the dead bodies of two women, are discovered; the first on waste ground in the city and the second on a remote hillside in Weardale, Beck’s search for Gina intensifies and he is forced to confront the true nature of Munroe’s violent world: a world that stretches out through the streets of Newcastle and along the Tyne to Rekendyke and beyond. ..

5.0 out of 5 stars Danny Beck - a man with a lot to give. 29 May 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Danny Beck grabs you and suddenly you are racing along with him through the fast turning pages of this book that you just won't be able to put down. Through the icy streets of Newcastle, over the moors to the Dale, in to dark places you hope you'll never find yourself near. Newcastle is shivering in its deepest winter months, providing the perfect chill that the story will set off inside of you. Then, on the other side of that life there's passion and caring, frustration and love. Richly drawn characters make you want to know more and more. This story makes us realise that these things really could go on under our own careless gaze. If this ends up TV....and it should, we'll all be glued to our sets every week. More from Danny Beck would be great...he's a man with a lot to give.

Private investigator, ex prison governor, Danny Beck comes onto the scene with his skills, insights and his own vulnerability in this fast paced story of the comlex dangerous search for the injured Gina. He joins forces with Aiden, ex-soldier who has his own ghosts ot lay. This novel, with its great sense of place, is at one time a fast paced thriller and an examination and of conscience and responsibility for women who are exploited in our so called humane society. Writer Avril Joy brings together the psychological insights shown in her 'Behind the Mask' series with the literary lyricism of The 'Sweet Track' and 'The Orchid House' to give us a new brand of literary crime. I am hoping to meet Danny Beck again. He is original, attractive and grounded in the real world. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, believable characters 17 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Review by Ken Otter:
I found that I could not put this book down. The plot is well thought-out and quickly leads the reader on to the next scene. The characters are believable, especially two of the main characters; Harry Munroe, the villian and Danny Beck, the intrepid investigator. The juxtaposition of their tough life on Tyneside against the quietness of Weardale is both accurate and compelling. As an ex-Chief Inspector in the Police Force I feel I can spot a well written crime story. I look forward to this authors next publication and would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in crime fiction.

Loved this - if that's the right word. Great characters including the villians and especially Munroe. There is some hard language here but the dialogue feels spot on. Read more
