Jenny Ruhl has produced an excellent introduction to the complex subject of diabetes and current thinking on approaches to its treatment and management. Her explanations are backed up with scientific research, and there is a website too (http://bloodsugar101.com/). She provides clear guidelines for optimum blood sugar control, something that most authors on this topic fail to do. She has diabetes herself, and knows what she is talking about. This book is easier to read and understand than Richard Bernstein's ground-breaking book Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars but his is worth a look too, because he writes from the perspective of a physician who has lived with long-term diabetes. I warmly recommend Jenny's book whether you have just been diagnosed or have had diabetes for years.

Eyeopener 31 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the best book I have ever read on Diabetes..& I could win prizes for the amount I've waded through.I had searched & searched for a responsible, non panic inducing, sensible account of what to expect, after being diagnosed with type 2 in August 2010.
I had begun to feel a complete failure, as I was piling on weight, yet eating a very healthy diet..
no junk food etc!
I was extra vigilant, as ALL of my family had this condition,& 2 of my cousins had died from bad management of it..so obviously, I didn't want to follow them.I had managed to get to 67 before I was diagnosed,& was pretty angry that I had succumbed to it.
What a relief to find this book by Jenny Ruhl, who explained that you don't get Diabtes just because you're overweight ( tho' I did realise this, as my sister weighs 7st 3lbs)
& the reasons for why you can put on weight, no matter what you do.
The chapter on what causes Diabetes is such an eyeopener..I know many people are made to feel as tho' they've caused this themselves, which as Jenny explains, is just not true.
Tho' I control mine by diet alone, there is a very informative chapter on drugs that are used for this condition..& how to make the right choices for whats best for YOU.
It is so well written, in lanquage that's easy to understand, & I for one felt so relived after reading it, & I wasn't about to drop dead with all the scary things you are always being told
you might get.
I wish I could meet this author...she comes across as a sensible level headed person, who knows what it's like to have this problem.
So my advice to anyone, would be to buy this book, you will never regret it..it will give you so much information, & I'm sure, will save you a lot of unecessary worry.
IT'S BRILLIANT !!!

life changing info 26 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is like a bible for the diabetic who wants to change their future. It is crammed full of information from the states, as they always get the latest drugs years before the uk, and before your G.P. is aware of these drugs and there awful side-effects. I think this book is streets ahead of the N.H.S. policies that are in place for uk. Not saying that the diet is easy to stick to but after a few months following the guide lines, I feel better than I have in a good few years. Also my blood sugar is coming down and the added benefit I'm losing weight.
