I also bought an advance copy of this album last year and I'm still listening to it repeatedly months later. I may be biased since I've heard these songs develop in gigs I've seen the past few years, but I think these are the coolest songs Nick's written yet, almost all of them about his family and his deep emotions about them. A review somewhere said Nick won't need to write his autobiography now, because it's all in his songs, and I'd tend to agree with that.
But they're not just about him, they're about every family (if that makes sense) - it's universal as well as very personal. This isn't an album you can just put on in the background. I dare you not to find yourself caught up in it. And the whole "feel" of the songs means as much to me as the lyrics. I can't really name a particular song I like best, as I wouldn't want to slight any others! The artwork is great too - lots of arty red and white reworkings of Nick's family photos, to illustrate the subjects of each song.
This is the album which most lives up to the promise of the live Harper experience (which you have to go see if you haven't yet). And, if there's any justice, this is the album which will bring him out from under the long shadow of his father's work. I wouldn't say Blood Songs is perfect (which leaves room for improvement!), but in my opinion it's the best studio album he's ever done. It's cohesive, warm, emotional and infuriatingly catchy, all at the same time. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it highly.

I managed to pick up an advance copy of Blood Songs a couple of months ago directly from Nick's record company. As with most of his albums, it shows off his guitar playing very well. It's not just a 'guitar' album though and most of the tracks make use of a full backing band.
For me there are a few standout tracks. 'Foreplay', the brief acoustic piece that begins the album, is a wonderful example of Nick's playing, showing off a beautiful tone complete with some of Nick's 'trademarks' like tuning peg bends etc (I couldn't believe it when I saw him do that live). 'Love is music' is infectious and actually manages to capture some of the energy Nick puts into his live playing. 'Boy Meets Planet' is one of Nick's more subtle political digs but is enjoyable all the same. You could easily hear the song and not realise what he's talking about.
I came across Nick for the first time at the Greenbelt festeval last summer (2003). During the course of his set so many people stopped to listen that they had to let the sides of the tent down to avoid going over capacity. The man is a great showman, a good singer who refuses to be limited by his natural range, a witty comedian and a wonderful guitarist. I was impressed enough to order his entire back-catalogue once I arrived home.
Nick is often referred to a folk act but he goes far beyond that, sometimes rocky sometimes funky and sometimes just plain funny. During the live acoustic set I saw he went into Monty Python's 'The Galaxy Song' followed by an incredible amalgamation of Elvis Presley's 'Guitar man' and Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love' complete with distortion and playing the guitar with his teeth.

Up until 'Blood Songs', the only album that has really 'done it for me' is the 'Double Life' live album. 'Harperspace' is good in patches, but doesn't really portray the power and emotion that this guy pumps out live. This latest offering is the closest he's come to doing that, and is a collection of finely crafted songs, thoughtful, amusing and emotional all rolled into one. Fantastic!

It virtually blows up in your face as soon as you hit play, Nick's on top form and is obviously enjoying life. Guitar and vocal dexterity mix with gentle moments. The world is on view here for all to see and experience. Spin it at 1300rpm now...
