4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and touching 30 Jan 2003
By Ange - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A very good book. The author doesn't smack you on the hand with heavy-handed theology and unrealistic portraits of sainted Christians and bedeviled non-Christians. Instead, she paints a picture of flawed people searching for answers, and other flawed people relying on their faith to sustain them in times of trial. Even the "bad guy" has a human side.
As a Christian, a minority and an Oregonian, I know a lot of what she writes is true. The trials faced by the protagonist and other characters with regard to the "face of the town" do exist in this day and age. Many of the people who spew the garbage facing the protagonist call themselves "Christian" and in another breath defy Paul's words of hope and salvation: "Christ is all and in all."
Things wrap up a little too neatly at the end, and some characters do not have enough depth, but overall, it's a good book with an inspiring, if sometimes painful, message about things we often don't want to think about.

I could harldy put this book down! I had to force myself to stop reading it! Definately one of M. Carlson's best! A heartwarming novel covering important subjects such as racism and how to deal with the issues (put a stop to it!). An overall great book that I recommend to anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars MAGNIFICANT! 3 Aug 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book has achieved AND conquered several different levels that one would not expect from a 'Christian' book.
To say how this book is able to captivate readers until the very end is something I've yet to find the words for, but rest assured it is one of the best Christian AND suspence books I've yet to read! (the Bible being an exception of course!)
Well done M. Carlson!

3.0 out of 5 stars A good story... 31 Jan 2013
By Anita C. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
This is an honest story about prejudice and senseless hatred that brings about sad consequences. I enjoyed the writing style and the author gave great descriptions of the characters and the setting. This was my first "Christian" novel. Though not too preachy, as a person that has studied the bible, I felt as if the lessons were predictable and more suitable as a study for nonbelievers. (Though we can all benefit from the basics). I'm not sure what I expected from "Christian" fiction and I'm still deciding whether I like having a built in devotional lesson in a fiction novel. I felt like the author could have developed the romantic relationship in the story a little more. I appreciate the message the author was trying to convey. Overall, I enjoyed it as a free book.

Worth mentioning....there were many errors such as type setting, punctuation, and spelling. I'm wondering if this was the final edited version? ? ? It bothered me and was distracting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally intense book 26 Jan 2013
By Carol Ford - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read a number of books by this author and this is the best so far. She really deals with some heavy emotional issues as well has racial extremism. I have been aware of the "white supremacy" issues but this delved in it a lot. It dealt with times from the 1960's until the 1990's from the view point of the south and the northwest. It also dealt with the big cities verses the small towns.

Grief plays a large part of the emotional package of this book. Dealing with the death of a child from Leukemia, the husband from a plane crash and a "blood sister" who took her own life or so it seemed. As an investigation continues, Judith gets more involved then she would think possible.

There is a depth to this book that most do not reach, especially Christian based books. With that depth you can be assured that it is still "clean" in language and it thoughts. A very well thought out and interesting book. I really enjoyed reading it.
