Book Description

6 Oct 2005
Dickens & Clot Investigations Ltd, a detective agency in a waterlogged, semi-buried Madrid of the near future, has a couple of unusual specialities: helping distraught authors and taking on Manex Chopeitia. The authors are frantically in search of characters who?ve quit the page and assumed a life of their own; Manex Chopeitia is the legendary Big Brother of the genetic-engineering company that rules over both the capital and the destiny of the US-Iberian Federation. Carlos Clot ? a paunchy, sartorially inept and alcoholic private eye ? cycles, boats and gumshoes his way around a drug- and drink-sodden metropolis. With the help of a cowboy sidekick, on the loose from an unfinished manuscript, Carlos is on a personal quest to put some dodgy people (both ?real? and ?fictional?) in their place.

Readers of Jasper Fforde's Nursery Crime series will find much that is familiar in Rafael Reig's Blood on the Saddle. Based in a Spain where petroleum has run out and the Americans invaded, there are broken families and escaped literary characters from books. There's a company that appears to dominate the economic skyline by owning the patent on virtually every genetic modification around. There is some sad, sad, shagging. There's alcoholism, and there's some sparkling humour. This is a rather peculiar novel, not entirely crime fiction, and not quite social criticism, and not quite science fiction. The detective is a man named Clot (why Clot? I didn't quite figure that out.) is the usual laconic PI, a loner. He appears to solve crimes entirely by accident, but hey, however you do it, it's good, right? There's a novel (also called Blood on the Saddle) which cannot be finished until Clot recovers a character who has leapt right out of the pages of the book and escaped: the author is collapsing with alcohol poisoning. It's all heady and surreal and ironic, and doesn't lose much in translation. Neat stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars great - surrealistic - quixotic 26 July 2013
By Boris - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The story of the talented Spanish writer is situated in a dystopian Spain of the present, where the petrol crisis of the 70s was final. The communists took over what made the United States occupy Spain and incorporate it into the territory of the USA. Anglo became official language, Madrid has been flooded to facilitate traffic in lack of petrol, Spain - a big slum - is controlled by pharmaceutical industry.
In this scenery a drunken private eye tries to solve several cases in a complex mixture of mystery novel, SF and fantastic literature where characters of fiction get alive or missing. All in all the story has original ideas in spades, although sometimes you get the impression that this and the following novel (A Pretty Face) are only studies for a big novel not yet written. But what you get is a lot of fun, queer but with depth too. Recommended!
