Although Lady Cecily Fitzhenry, the redoubtable heroine of this tale, is entirely a creation of the author's imagination, she leaps off the page and it's hard to believe that she never existed. This is an astonishing tale of social mobility and political intrigue, with plenty of comedy and tragedy thrown into the mix. Although the author moulds some historical events to suit the purposes of the story, her research is thorough and the novel serves both as a hugely enjoyable read and as a fascinating insight into the position of women in the 18th century.
