I first came across Adam Mason with BROKEN, a film screened at FrightFest back in 2006. That film was flawed, but considering the budget was only $10,000, it stands as an incredible achievement with some genuine stand-out moments of brutality.
Mason's next film, THE DEVIL'S CHAIR was also very interesting, albeit a bit slow to start with before it delivered well on the horror level in the last 30 minutes.
BLOOD RIVER however, is Adam Mason's greatest work to date and borders on masterpiece. Again, utilising a low-budget to the maximum, the film uses only three main characters to boil the tension and suspense to nerve-shredding levels.
The opening uses elements from other classic 'outback' movies such as DUST DEVIL and THE HITCHER (the original) as a young couple find themselves stranded in the desert following a near-fatal car crash. Stumbling on the deserted town down the road, Blood River, they encounter the mysterious hitch-hiker Joseph (the outstanding Andrew Howard) and that's where things get really interesting..
Everything about this film is fantastic, from the performances (all brilliant) through to the beautiful cinematography (the helicopter shots look amazing), the music and not least of all, the story which holds true all the way through to it's amazing ending.
I simply cannot recommend this film enough to all fans of horror films, and although Adam Mason currently resides in LA, this film truly marks him out as one of the best British genre filmmakers working today. A must-see!
