4.0 out of 5 stars Formulaic but gory -- a film of three parts 7 Jan 2012
The film has a very long prologue which establishes the back story and which is fairly unpleasant but again, not particularly original, then it has the standard "let's get to know the teens" section, which was basically boring and lost it a star, then the denouement with the killer going on a rampage killing them off with glee and speed in wonderfully gory ways.

It was almost like three short films by three different directors loosely connected by the thin plot. The final third is by far the best if you like slasher films because it's just running around, screaming, killing and mayhem.

Good points -- the last twenty or so minutes more than makes up for the rest of its shortcomings and pedestrian direction. The killings are occasionally imaginative but always gruesome. Revealing the identity of the killer well before the end of the film is less common in the genre and works well in this film. Also good to see Danielle Harris cast against type -- I'll say no more -- watch it and see what I mean.

Bad points -- some of the dialogue is really lame. It's very predictable and formulaic -- teens commemorate a massacre and get bumped off and the first ones to have sex with each other are the first to die etc etc.

Other - The characters aren't particularly developed or particularly likeable but at least that helps you deal with the carnage bestowed upon them.

If you want a bit of mindless violence, sex and lame teen dialogue, then it's worth checking out. i wasn't sure what it would be like but it was cheap so I took a chance and overall I'm glad I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cover quote rings true 12 Nov 2010
Outside of the rare slasher movies that try adding a new slant to the formula, there's basically two kinds of slasher films; those that half-heartedly go through the motions of something that has already been done, and those where the people behind the movie realized because they're working on something done many times before, they had better find a way their movie could stand out.

Blood Night is the latter.

With its reasonably short runtime (after the prologue the main section of the movie is about 65 minutes long), high body count and various methods of dispatching the victims this movie definitely succeeds in being the mindless entertainment you'd expect from a film who's cover features the words "kick ass" or "slasher movie" (modern slasher film anyway - it takes real talent to produce a genuinely scary version of a heavily used plot).

Speaking of scares... well, the movie isn't scary, but does achieve the atmosphere levels you'd expect from a haunted house attraction, or possibly a spooky Halloween party or something. I understand why Gorezone started their Weekend of Horror 2010 this this, because it definitely sets the right mood for a horror-oriented event.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its a bloody good show 17 Mar 2014

Gore gore gore graphic gore. Nothing you ain't seen before a gazillion times but what the heck it's got Danielle Harris in it and she's better now than she was in Halloween 4. Just to reiterate: this film is an 18 for a good reason. But what's wrong with a little (or lot) gore?

2.0 out of 5 stars Mice tattoos...(spoilers) 1 Feb 2014
A group of teenagers celebrate Blood Night.

It's the anniversary of the death of a local axe murderer, Mary Hatchet. The group find themselves face to face with the realities of her haunting.

As they run from the bloody rampage left behind they'll need to survive the night to expose the truth behind the legend of Bloody Mary...

oh, and it has a twist right near the end...

it's another house party celebrating murder, where all the guests spend the remainder of the night in peril.

It's easy enough to watch, the gore factor is at a solid medium, but we have the added bonus of Scream Queen Harris, which is always welcome and Moseley as the Ghost story telling old man.

The rest of the cast are filler, nothing more than victims of the killer and to show some flesh.

The beginning of the film is quite good, but then it does slowly go downhill from there.

The ending is a bit of a cop out, but it's short and does what you would expect.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good horror film 7 April 2013

The star of this is arguably Danielle Harris who seems to have come a long way since her young days in the Halloween 4 and Halloween 5 films.
