Bloody Marvellous, 19 Aug 2009
This review is from: Blood Money (Bev Morriss Mysteries) (Paperback)
An old chum of mine recommended Maureen Carter's latest book to me and I have to say I'm jolly glad he did. Blood Money is absolutely thrilling from the worrying, yet provocative opening pages to the tense and beautifully crafted exposition. Roll over Ian Rankin, Carter is "Top Rankin'", as I believe the lyric from a song by a popular modern ska beat combo went, although unfortunately the name of said combo temporarily eludes me. I am looking forward to more Bev Morriss stories from Maureen Carter, her distinctive characters and fluent, albeit spare, prose make Blood Money so intriguing. In the meantime I have all her earlier Bev Morriss books to read and what a pleasure that will be. If you haven't read these books you have no idea just how much of a treat you are missing.

Delightfully terrifying...., 24 July 2009
This review is from: Blood Money (Bev Morriss Mysteries) (Paperback)
I have been a fan of Carter's Bev Morriss series since the first book and Blood Money, the sixth in the series is no disappointment. It also isn't for the easily unnerved due to the truly terrifying Sandman and the vicious, twisted mindgames that he plays on his victims. I personally recommend reading it in a well lit room, in the middle of the day - especially if you too have a touch of coulrophobia! Carter has spun another magnificent tale, with a number of plotlines all woven expertly throughout. Again, the icing on the cake is the wonderfully developed characters who feel so real to the reader. Bev is still recovering from her ordeal in the previous book (Bad Press)and trying to balance that with her duty as a cop, she takes a personal interest in the Sandman's games, and as always will stop at nothing to catch him. Yet it is not all heavy; a wonderful support cast provides light relief and sharp, witty humour. This is a book you truly cannot put down, it is a fast paced, sharp tongued, heart racing, head spinning page turner that keeps you gripped until the final twist. Truly epic with an amazing ending that will leave everyone on tenterhooks!

A TERRIFIC BOOK, NOT TO BE MISSED, 17 July 2009
This review is from: Blood Money (Bev Morriss Mysteries) (Paperback)
This is the sixth outing for Maureen Carter's incorrigible Bev Morriss, and to my mind the best yet. The focus of Bev's latest investigation is the tracking down of the eerie Sandman - the intruder macabrely disguised as a circus clown, who gets into the houses of lone females, but whose motives are gradually revealed as being far more sinister than first believed. It's by turns scary and sharp - excellently paced, sprinkled with Bev's own brand of sardonic humour - and the tension is maintained brilliantly all the way through. You become involved with the likeable and very human cast of characters, from the diverse team of detectives involved in the Sandman's capture, to the skilfully drawn suspects. And all through the book is the endearing Bev, tumbling in and out of predicaments, juggling a complex emotional life with the stresses of the job, and still treading the ongoing tightrope of sexual tension with her boss. Maureen Carter does a marvellous and skilful job of constantly keeping Bev and Byford permanently on the edge of real commitment. Bev is a wonderful character; this is a tremendously good story, and it really is a book not to be missed.
