For me the measure of a good crime thriller is reading in bed at night and even if your eyes are tired you can still do 'just one more chapter'. Then you do one more after that. Blood Money is exactly that kind of book.
Fans of the author's previous books will be familiar with the stripped back prose she uses along with the snappy dialogue, as well as finding out what happened at the end of the previous book. For those new to this writer the book stands perfectly on its own two feet, as the two main protagonists find themselves at opposite ends of the same story. It's skillfully done. We have the detective on one side and the 'baddie' on the other. They never meet but their worlds overlap.
As usual the characters are brilliantly drawn, Pavel is essentially a monster but Hunt fuels him with a sense of injustice which allows us to not just overlook that but almost feel like we're on his side. That is an accomplishment. Familiar characters from the other books are intertwined as well and it's set against a backdrop of contemporary Dublin which many will recognise.
Can't wait for the next one.
