It's been a long time since Leila's previous album but this record is still as exciting and relevant as Like Weather was almost 10 years ago. Some incredible guest vocalists (Martina Topley-Bird and Terry Hall, Luca Santucci and even Leila's sister) add a little spice to the playful, offbeat and sometimes disturbing texture of melodies and beats. More than an electronica record - avoid at your peril!

Dark, Elegant, Exquisite and Beautiful! 3 Nov 2008
By Rafael Cova - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
It is the exquisite attention to the possibility, behavior, and character of sound that makes "Blood, Looms and Blooms" an accomplished piece of work. Leila's years of experience as a live DJ and programmer (she has recorded music on Aphex Twin's label and done live re-mixing and engineering for Bjork, as well as supporting her with a DJ slot earlier this year) really come into play here. Every single noise, no matter how small in the mix, appears to be heavily treated and subjected to radical EQ taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the Logic computer program she favors. These far-reaching, assured explorations of sound are particularly breathtaking on the album's first single, "Mettle", which is also one of the few exclusively instrumental tracks. The dark mood and layered rhythmic sparring is uncannily reminiscent of fellow label(Warp Records)mate Flying Lotus, and weaves a sample of a dripping faucet that has been sequenced to sound like a beat into the tough fibres of other pleasingly combative lower frequencies. Another highlight is "Daisies, Cats and Spacemen"( the best track of this album), where Leila's sister, the beautiful voice of "Roya Arab", provides striking vocals and lyrics, which are weighted with imagery of ancient cities and "filthy footmarks reflecting tear-filled skies."
Featuring collaborations of special guests like Martina Topley-Bird, Terry Hall, "Luca Santucci" and many others, this album fuses the personalities of its varied guests with an adventurous palette of sound.
Leila - Blood, Looms & Blooms 14 Sep 2011
By scoundrel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
After a long absence, Leila re-emerges on Warp with BLOOD, LOOMS & BLOOMS. The grinding and twinkling on "Mollie" shows she's not lost her taste for abstraction, and Terry Hall's appearance on "Time to Blow" demonstrates her love of setting vocals into strange settings. For definitive proof, listen to the the little wisps of vocals that punctuate the bizarro breaks on "Little Acorns," or how the over-poetic torch song "Daisies, Cats And Spacemen" stretches out over the drum breaks and plucked bass. Leila also expands her sonic palette, diving head-first into jangly noise guitars with "Mettle," or the slinky Yma Sumac-like "The Exotics" (with Ninja Tune staple Seaming To standing in for Sumac). But the mutant R&B that marked her first albums is still here (along with vocalist Luca Santucci) on "Teases Me," as is the off-kilter wobbliness, like "Lush Dolphins," and neo-classical sensibilities ("Young Ones"). But even better yet is the new: Martina Topley-Bird offering her voice for "Deflect" (which sort of rocks out) and "Why Should I?," which has a archaic beauty. A totally fascinating album.
