I have to agree with the first review here, this is another great book in this increasingly popular series, based on the exploits of detectives from Scotland Yard. Colbeck and Leeming make a magnificant partnership and we are treated to a truly monstrous villain in the best traditions of the Victorian novelette. Excellant writing as always in this series and many twists and turns before the books end.

I did not expect to enjoy these books but I have now read all the series and instead of getting bored with them I find them more thrilling especially Blood on the Line I think that out does the others. Descriptions of the surroundings are good and the stories are absorbing.

railway detective 16 May 2011

I very much enjoyed this book, having never read any of Edward Marston's work before; I bought it because my son-in-law wanted it for his birthday. It will appeal to anyone who likes detective stories, and is interested in the mid-nineteenth century and the English railway system of the time, as well society in general. There are several more books in the same series.
As a writer myself, I noticed that at about two-thirds of the way through there is a shocking, dramatic and unexpected development which makes the reader doubt if they are after all right in predicting the ending.
After much fascinating detail about English railways, the story moves across the Atlantic to New York, which I enjoyed because I've recently been to New York for the first time. It was interesting to see different ways of crossing the Atlantic in those days - some types of boat were much faster than others, and so criminals could be overtaken if they were on slower type of ship.
