Review

'Refreshingly original . . . Mariner is a wonderful character . . . Altogether a very lively read.' Liza Cody 'I really couldn't put it down' RAW EDGE MAGAZINE 'Collett is a wonderful writer, subtle, clever, strong on atmosphere and character. This is a fitting follow-up to her debut and reassures the crime fan that the police procedural is in safe hands. More, please' YORKSHIRE POST --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

When two teenagers go missing on the same day on Mariner's patch, it seems to be nothing more than a coincidence. Leaving aside their age and disappearance, the two have little in common. Yasmin Akram is the talented grammar school educated daughter of devout Muslim professionals. Ricky Skeet disappears after storming out of his council house after a row with his mother's latest boyfriend. Mariner knows Ricky's mother from his days in uniform, so he is less than happy when his superiors - bowing to media pressure - take him the Skeet case and reassign him to the more politically sensitive investigation. The press - and his bosses - seem convinced that Yasmin's disappearance is a racially motivated abduction, especially since the Akram's have found themselves the target of the far right and a prominent white supremacist group. Working with Asian liaison officer Jamilla Begum on the more high profile case, Mariner soon discovers that the picture of Yasmin her school-friends paint is far different to her parents claim that she is a total innocent... --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Classic who-dunnit 28 Oct 2005
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is Chris Collett's second novel featuring DI Mariner - as enjoyable as the first book was, it has to be said that this one is much better. The theme of two teenagers going missing may be commonplace in crime thrillers but Ms Collett's imaginative treatment keeps the reader hooked - plus there are enough twists to keep you guessing 'who-dunnit' right to the end.

I look forward to reading the next DI Mariner story.

Good British crime 19 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
I like reading crime fiction, so I guess I will like whatever book falls in my hands!
This one was great, I couldn't put it down, I just had to find out who killed the teenagers. Is not too long either, so is easy to read, manageable.
I would recommend it

This sequel to Chris Collett's first Mariner crime story is a very worthy successor. Again set in modern Birmingham, she tackles the issue of "class distinction" head on, whilst handling race issues sensitively, too. Mariner is a tough detective inspector with a soft heart, torn by his conscience and frustrated by the powers that be. Lots of humour and moments of tears in this story which is well paced. Again, it manages to hold the reader's interest to the final page.Definitely an ideal book to buy for other crime fans.
