Seriously Scary 8 April 2010
By Damaskcat TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Fletcher family - Gareth, Alice and three children - Tom, Joe and Millie - have recently moved into their newly built house on the Lancashire Moors next door to a graveyard and a church. The church has been disused for ten years and Harry Laycock the new vicar has decided to open it again and start holding services. But things are not as they seem in the village - small children go missing in various ways; the Fletcher children keep seeing a girl in the churchyard though no one else has seen her. Harry frequently thinks there's someone in the church with him but cannot find them.

Then there's Evi - a psychiatrist - who is treating Gillian whose daughter apparently died in a house fire, but Gillian is convinced she didn't die there. The villagers seem secretive and the place is owned by the Renshaw family - to whom many of the villagers seem connected in some way or another. There are strange rituals which the villagers follow and it is coming up to Halloween and All Hallows and things are getting frightening for those not in the know.

The characters are complex - I liked Evi and the policeman - Brian Rushton. The children were well drawn too as were their parents. The tension builds from the very first page to a suitably terrifying climax and an unexpected twist. If you were scared by S J Bolton's first two books then you will be even more scared by this one. The writing is understated and the most frightening ritual - the Blood Harvest - is not described in detail which makes it even more terrifying - especially as the villagers want to exclude Harry and the Fletchers from it. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

'Blood Harvest' is the author's third thriller, and
it proved to be just as scary and gripping as the
first two.
The tale is set in an isolated, claustrophobic
village in the Pennines,on the Lancashire/Yorkshire
borders.A village where ancient rituals are still carried
out,and which has a history of young girls going missing
and mysteriously dying.Someone seems to want this trend to
continue. New to the village are Harry, the vicar,Eli,a psychiatrist,
and a family with three young children, all of whom become central
to the plot.
This is excellent storytelling ,well researched, with rounded
interesting characters,and not least,relentless suspense.
First Class.

This is the third book by this author - I'm not sure now why I picked up the first one, Sacrifice, but I'm glad I did! I was riveted and I don't think anyone got any sense out of me from the time I started reading it until I had finished it. The second book, Awakening, is stronger and more mature in the writing style - and the story is just as gripping. And I'm delighted to find that this third book is even better. I had to restrict myself to 50 pages a day just so I didn't sit and devour the whole book in one sitting - I really wanted to savour the mystery and drama and buildup in this book.

The story premise is around a house built on a property between two old churches, one medieval and one more modern in an English village on the moors. All seems idyllic until shortly after the new vicar arrives, when old mysteries seemingly begin to intertwine with new ones - who is the odd figure Tom believes he sees in the churchyard? What happened to Gillians' daughter in the house fire? And what's up with the odd rituals being undertaken in the village to celebrate harvests, All Souls Day etc. All is most definitely not as it seems.

A delicious juicy story well peopled and well written - the mix of drama, life, mystery, and the apparently supernatural are blended well and believably in this very maturely presented story. I cannot recommend this, and S J Bolton's earlier two books highly enough. And I'm glad to see another book coming in the next few months. Can't wait!
