4.0 out of 5 stars Insane...how Halloween would be if Michael Myers worshipped Khorne!, 10 April 2009
I'll get this out of the way: the violence in this book is utterly insane. If you like violent fiction and graphic horror, you are going to be in red heaven. Think what would happen if the most vicious productions of Rob Zombie and Quentin Tarantino had a love child; it would probably be something like Blood for the Blood God. If you like any incarnation of Halloween, if you enjoy slasher films or books/films where characters are getting bumped off one by one, you need to read Blood for the Blood God.

A group of eight Chaos-aligned tribes are menaced by a common foe, the Skulltaker, a champion of Khorne whose quest for vengeance has caused carnage of mythic proportions. He's after the leaders of the eight tribes. He wants their heads to wear on his belt. No-one can stop the Skulltaker, and for those unfortunates who are stupid enough to try, the Skulltaker has a little surprise: he is invincible.

The eight tribes are in trouble, but in true Chaotic fashion, their prejudice against one another means all attempts at forming an alliance are futile -- even though the Skulltaker's rampage has begun. And believe me, the Skulltaker unleashes holy hell on everyone and everything he can get hold of. I've never read another story where a Chaos warlord turns tail and runs, but here it is presented in such a compelling manner and the characterisation is so convincing that we can easily believe what is happening. If I saw the Skulltaker in action I'd be running too. CL Werner really knows how to write for Chaos.

Two of the tribes send a small group of heroes to find and reforge a shattered weapon which they believe can defeat the Skulltaker. By heroes, I mean the nastiest bunch of cold blooded killers we've seen in a long time. Two problems with their quest: the heroes are constantly at each other's throats, and the Chaos wastes seem determined to kill them all.

Werner never forgets that his characters are all villains and he never forgets that they are aligned with Chaos. He plays it for everything it is worth and does so successfully.

This is not the best-written book I've ever read but it is possibly the most exciting idea the Black Library has ever had. The Skulltaker is an elemental force of death and his every appearance culminates in a slaughter so outrageous that some readers will find the gore hard to take. Keep reading, because this is one hell of a story.

I like everything about the book: the characters, the story, the intrigue, the incredible scale of the violence. It's not quite on a par with the Orfeo trilogy (particularly the excellent Plague Daemon) for gritty realism or clever writing, but in terms of exhileration and entertainment, this is easily one of the best the Black Library has produced. I literally could not put the book down.
