Book Description

16 Oct 2008 Gollancz S.F.
For more than a hundred years humans, dwarves, gnomes and elves lived together in relative peace. But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over and now the races once again fight each other - and themselves: dwarves are killing their kinsmen, and elves are murdering humans and elves, at least those elves who are friendly to humans . . . Into this tumultuous time is born a child for whom the witchers of the world have been waiting. Ciri, the granddaughter of Queen Calanthe, the Lioness of Cintra, has strange powers and a stranger destiny, for prophecy names her the Flame, one with the power to change the world - for good, or for evil . . . Geralt, the witcher of Rivia, has taken Ciri to the relative safety of the Witchers' Settlement, but it soon becomes clear that Ciri isn't like the other witchers. As the political situation grows ever dimmer and the threat of war hangs almost palpably over the land, Geralt searches for someone to train Ciri's unique powers. But someone else has an eye on the young girl, someone who understand exactly what the prophecy means - and exactly what Ciri's power can do. This time Geralt may have met his match.

Review

"Sapkowski's world, and the sense of depth, is reminiscent of Middle Earth. And while he includes all the traditional fantasy characters you would expect, Sapkowski also manages to revitalize the genre with energetic and compelling writing. A breath of fresh air in a well-worn genre. Don't miss it!" (DREAMWATCH TOTAL SCI FI )

"The character interplay is complex, unsentimental and anchored in brutal shared history. All bodes well for twisty plotting in future volumes." (Nic Clarke SFX )

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish it was translated one book later... 22 May 2009
Format:Paperback
I'm really sorry they didn't translate the "Sword of Destiny" beforehand as it would make many issues in the "Blood of the Elves" much more clear. Also, beware of the 3rd volume ("Time of Contempt" as they'll probably translate it) - it's a little dull in comparison to the first and the second volume ("Baptism of Fire") and sometimes you may find yourself reading on just to get past the slow moment. It's the worst piece of the Saga, IMHO. Fortunately, you get the 4th ("Tower of the Swallow") and the 5th ("Lady of the Lake" - yes, he DOES borrow from the Arthurian legend... ;>) pieces that are as good as the first ones. Have fun reading :)!

PS. Oh, and I certainly do hope that Sapkowski gets some serious following in UK and maybe even US, so that his other books also get translated (there's another piece, you know, a trilogy loosely based on the Husitic wars era in the medieval Czech/Silesia - "Warriors of God" /pardon my awkward translation ;>/ - also a worthy read!).

Plus, imagine a well-performed film based on the Geralt's story (by this I mean sth completely opposite to that pathetic attempt of the Polish filmmakers...) - think white-haired Hugh Jackman and Megan Fox as Yennefer ;>>>

Gollancz are not generally known for their marketing booboos, but in the case of 'Blood of Elves' it would appear that a potentially hugely successful fantasy franchise has been shot squarely in the foot. The decision to skip an English translation of Sapkowski's second collection of Geralt short stories doesn't just confound from a business perspective. It also serves to confuse reader expectations. 'Blood of Elves' is the first in a FIVE book series that assumes familiarity with both short story collections. This is indicated nowhere on the cover, and nowhere within its pages. The book ends abruptly seeming to have achieved only the merest of starts - surely leaving readers unfamiliar with Sapkowski's publishing history in his native Poland bewildered and disappointed.

'The Last Wish' was a breath of fresh air in Fantasy fiction, without resorting to trickery or weirdism. 'Blood of Elves' is - out of context - rambling, oddly paced, and never gets anywhere. As part of the Geralt 'continuum', it might have contributed to a growing sense of doom in the Witcher's world. As a standalone novel, it can only disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE OTHER HALF OF THE WITCHERS' SKY 19 Aug 2011
By NeuroSplicer TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am going to go against the current here but I actually enjoyed this third collection of the Witcher stories better than the first book, The Last Wish. In fact, I found this to be more of an actual novel than the first one which was more of a collection of loosely interconnected stories.

Scheming knights and short-tempered dwarfs; charming elves and enchanting witches; monsters and monster-slayers; scheming kings and the thickening of the fog of war; conspiring wizards and the law of Surprise. And in a world in turmoil, Geralt of Rivia, the White Wolf, is entrusted with Ciri, the girl of prophesy - and his destiny. Whichever that may be.

Too bad the publisher did not consider it necessary to translate and publish the second book of the series, The Sword of Destiny. It would had tied the story of the Witcher much better together.

Sure, it may not be canonical literature but it is a great fantasy book to bring to the beach or take to your comfortable armchair during a rainy weekend. For its genre, it is a great book.

Recommended to fantasy fans and RPG gamers alike.
