Product Description

This first in a series launch introduces Claire Watkins, a deputy sheriff for the Pepin County Police Department. Claire, a former Minneapolis police detective, and her 10-year-old daughter Meg fled the Twin Cities after her husband, Steve, also a cop, was killed.

When Landers Anderson--an elderly neighbor who befriended Claire and Meg--dies of a heart attack after being sideswiped with a shovel, Claire determines to find the culprit. This involves delving into Landers's family history and investigating the machinations of a right-wing group, Homeowners of America, that is buying up property to build an environmentally unsound development.

At the same time, Meg fearfully admits to Claire that she saw the man who killed Steve. Claire contacts her former partner, Det. Bruce Jacobs, and prods him into accelerating the investigation into Steve's death.

Suspense thriller 4 Nov 2011

Meg watched her father being killed by a hit and run driver; now she is scared that the man she saw will come after her. Claire her mother is a police officer and decides to move out of the city to a small country town and start a new life in backwater USA. But her neighbour dies in mysterious circumstances, and as things slowly develop, Claire realises that she, her daughter and others she cares about are all at risk.

I did enjoy the story, although I felt at times it was a bit too drawn out and perhaps it slows down the development of the suspense. The characters are reasonably well written and you can understand their motivations; they are mostly quite believable.

In the end, I did guess part of the ending although it was sufficiently different to make it interesting and a little unusual. Overall I enjoyed the story, and wouldn't mind reading more by this author.

I liked this book - the first in a series (must look for more!).

It's just a pity that the original paper form must have been scanned in and not checked for errors. The number of times the word fece was used instead of face really began to annoy me.

I hope that other books in the series, if there are any, are more carefully edited before being released on Kindle.

Shockingly bad formating destroys this book. You are reading something then it is all changes and you are puzzled, it doesn't make sense. You read the section again and you discover a paragraph break is missing. This doesn't happen once but constantly. 'Fece' seems to be used instead of 'face'. I normally overlook formating in Kindle books but this one really got to me. The publishers Quality Control Dept or Editor must have been on vacation the day this book went through which is a pity as otherwised it is a good story and I would have easily scored it 4 star. I would read this author again but only if I was certain before hand that the quality of the formatting had vastly improved.
