Review

"Waddell's second outstanding thriller (after "The Blood Detective") mixes the genealogy of a family who can't escape their ancestors' deeds in Utah with today's Morman fundamentalist splinter groups. Featuring brilliant detection by the police, the crime scene investigators, and the genealogist... this is a breathless roller-coaster ride."--"Library Journal" (starred review) ."..solidly plotted...boasts a protagonist whose unusual profession gives the story an added element of intrigue: using genealogy to unlock the victim's past and explain a contemporary crime. A definite winner, and further proof that Nigel Barnes is going to be a strong series lead." --"Booklist"

Product Description

Katie Drake was an affluent single mother living in Queen's Park - until someone cut her throat and tore out her tongue. Worse still, the killer has abducted her fourteen-year-old daughter, Naomi.

Detective Chief Inspector Grant Foster quickly sees chilling parallels with the disappearance of teenager Leonie Stamey three years earlier. With hopes fading of finding Naomi alive, he calls on genealogist Nigel Barnes to piece together the links between the families of the two girls.

The trail leads Nigel back to 1890, when a young couple arrived in the UK. A husband and wife fleeing a terrible crime in their past, and harbouring a secret that's now having bloody repercussions in the present ...

Blood Will Have Blood 20 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
I've now read both the both the Grant Foster/Nigel Barnes (and Heather) books in quick succession, and both are well-written, enjoyable, quick reads, and work as genealogical handbooks with a plot as well as crime novels. "Blood Atonement" is perhaps less convincing as I don't think the American scenes work quite so well and the two investigators over there escaped a little more easily than I thought they might, and it was obviously difficult for the author to tie up all the American loose ends, but it was still a page-turner. The ending of this book suggests the next one is more than just a glint in the author's eye already, and I hope it includes some insider satire on the television industry as Nigel's alternative career takes off, and that someone other than Foster takes the obligatory beating: the pain should be shared.

Beware the past 16 May 2010

I haven't read Dan Waddell's frst book which means that there are a fw gaps in this one which would have been filled, I suppose, if I had. However, 'Blood Atonement' is a fascinating read for fans of genealogy and good crime mysteries.

I'm a fan of the latter and not of the former but this book manages to bring together the two strains in a very readable way. I'm not usually, either, a fan of books spanning different time periods but, to a great extent, the author copes with this so that the reader doesn't feel as though they are suddenly removed from the main thrust of the story. The trend for story-telling these days is to mix one or more periods of time so I guess a starter in 1890 is not so far removed.

There is good characterization with Nigel Barnes and Grant Foster leading from the front and certainly the book leaves us plenty of scope to ponder the next outing for these two. We shall have to wait and see.

Having recently read and thoroughly enjoyed The Blood Detective I purchased this sequel, which is just as good.

This time Detective Chief Inspector Grant Foster asks Nigel Barnes for help in finding relations for two girls who disappeared at the age of 14 both, 3 years apart, at the same time as their mother's were found dead. Nigel is racing against the clock to see if the theory is correct and traces the family back until 1891 when the trail goes cold.

I'm very glad I read the two books in order as the relationship between the characters including Detective Inspector Heather Jenkins has developed well. These books are complex and very well written, I'm so glad I came across the listmania that included them, a real find!

I'm hoping that Dan Waddell will write another in this series, there appeared to be a link to a new episode at the end of Blood Atonement, perhaps it's on it's way?
