Review

Enchanting . . . McIntosh manages to sustain suspense while deftly handling a large cast of characters and an intricate plot. (PUBLISHERS WEEKLY )

McIntosh has assembled a wonderfully varied cast of royals, soldiers, and assassins for her swashbuckling tale. . . I can't wait for the next volume (STARBURST )

If you are tired of plodding trilogies in which little seems to happen, these books are definitely for you (ROBIN HOBB )

Book Description

BLOOD AND MEMORY continues the epic tale begun in MYRREN'S GIFT - a page-turning adventure story that marks Fiona McIntosh as a major new force in fantasy fiction.

I bought Myrren's Gift, the first book, expecting the usual fantasy characters, quest etc etc but was genuinely surprised and delighted to find such a unique novel. The main premise (albeit perhaps borrowed a little bit from TV's Quantum Leap) is given a neat twist and becomes quite enthralling as the hero Wyl battles in various guises to save his country and, most importantly, those he cares about from a twisted king. This novel builds on the politics and treachery of the first book and you find yourself hoping that Wyl gets a break from his continued heartache - a good sign that the author has succeeded in really making you care about the fate of the main characters. Of course being the middle book of a trilogy only more despair is piled upon our hero and the ending really sets you up for a cracking conclusion (roll on December and book 3!). I look forward to reading much more from Ms McIntosh, she is indeed a worthy successor to Robin Hobb (who she credits in this book as being an inspiration). If you are looking for something just a bit out of the ordinary I would highly recommend this series.

Wow! After reading Fiona's first book in the series and finding it so original and well written, I was really keen to get my hands on the second book of the trilology. I finished it in the early hours of this morning and found it equally absorbing and exciting. A middle book in a trilology can sometimes slow the pace of the plot down a little, but this doesn't. Without giving too much away, Wyl finds himself in further trouble and his problems continue as Myrren's gift follows him throughout this second book. There are some new twists however. Fiona handles the difficulty of "he" and "she" in Wyl's character very well, in her dialogue and it is fascinating to read how the two personalities blend.
There will always be criticisms from people who discover "inconsistencies" in something so radical, but I honestly never noticed any as I was too wrapped up in the story. There is a lot of heartache for her major characters who are very well developed and believable. The "good versus evil" theme is there of course, but her "good" characters have flaws in that they make mistakes as we all do. Even Celimus who seems to have no redeeming qualities at all is drawn to some extent as a victim of his father's mistakes and his mother's obscession with him. Also there is a sense of helplessness among them as their lives become darker and this second book draws to a conclusion with so much still unsolved. Fiona's chapters so often have "cliffhanger" endings and this is the case as the book ends.
I am longing to get into the final part of this trilology to discover how the author weaves all the questions and answers into what I'm sure will be a great ending to a fresh and fabulous tale. Fiona McIntosh stands in her own right with "The Quickening" and has proved herself more than worthy to join the ranks of quality fantasy writers. I'm now looking to purchase more of her work.

The first book in this 'quickening' trilogy was so refreshing and different as a fantasy novel that I read the book within a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. As you can imagine I was compelled to buy the second book 'Blood and Memory'in the series as quickly as I could so I could get my teeth back into the story. In all honesty I was extremely disappointed and some what bored by the end.

There was simply no expanse on the world that Fiona McIntosh had created and the basic story from the first book did not change throughout the whole second book. There is an Evil King that is basically a nasty piece of work, and Wyl Thirsk wants revenge and fails at every attempt to save his loved ones and destroy the tyrant. He does however move from body to body in the process thanks to the 'Gift'. In some parts it seemed to me that Fiona McIntosh was writing blind and and had written the book chapter after chapter with no real concept of where it was all going by the end. This was made apparent by the end of the book when Myriens father appeared in the novel and he didnt have a clue how the 'Gift' worked, yet he was the one who passed it on to Myrien ???

In my eyes there needed to be more spice added to the story, and a few more exciting characters thrown in to make up a recipe for success. I just think Fiona McIntosh had a fantastic idea with the 'gift' concept and then played on it throughout the whole first and second book. It was all a little one dimensional in my eyes.

I will attempt to read the final book in the trilogy 'Bridge of Souls' but I wont hold my breath. It just seemed that this 'quickening' trilogy could have been written in two books and made much more enthralling and exciting and not dragged on over three. I am sorry Fiona but I am still yet to find a modern fantasy novelist to rival Raymond E Feist and David Gemmell.
