BOB DYLAN Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to ... Read more in Amazon's Bob Dylan Store

Product Description

As part of its Bob Dylan catalog restoration series, Mobile Fidelity is thoroughly humbled to have the privilege of mastering the iconic LP from the original master tapes and pressing it on 45RPM LPs at RTI. The end result is the very finest, most transparent analog edition of Blonde on Blonde ever produced. Forever renowned for what the Bard deemed ''that thin, that wild mercury sound,'' the album's famed aural character lives and breathes on this superb version, with wider and deeper grooves affording playback of previously buried information and lifelike presentation of the studio sessions.

Forever prized for a unique sound that cultural critic Greil Marcus tagged ''the most glamorous record imaginable; listening you [can] see the checkered jester's suit Dylan had worn on stage for the nine previous, furious months,'' Blonde on Blonde is to music, production, prose, and performance as what hydrogen is to water. The secret to its inimitable aural character partially stems from Dylan's request in Nashville to producer Bob Johnston to remove the baffles from the studio room, allowing the musicians to interact as well as the music to assume a more organic quality that drifts from one microphone to another. Mobile Fidelity's reissue captures this ensemble ambience, with echoes, resonation, and some of the most natural timbres you'll ever hear in plain sight. The story of Blonde on Blonde is almost as compelling as the music within. Dylan, frustrated with how initial attempts fared in New York, relocating to Tennessee and pairing with Nashville's top session players as well as members of what would become the Band, feverishly chasing perfectionism while also arriving at an on-the-fly feel that remains a reference point for recorded music.

The Bard sweated over lyrics, demanded his band get the exact sounds he heard in his head, and limited most takes to a handful at most. A majority of songs were recorded long after midnight, the post-A.M. vibe reflected in the nocturnal aura, woozy optimism, inversion of intervals, and spiritual soulfulness of the playing. As for the tunes? Chapters of books and lengthy theses are dedicated to the sheer conscious-altering power, mythical weight, character cast, and convention-obscuring magnetism of the lyrics - to say nothing of the sophisticated albeit pure playing within, as arrangements touch upon gospel, R&B, pop, traditional and contemporary blues, vaudeville, folk, and more. Then there's Dylan's inventive phrasing, his manipulation of pitch and locution, helping the narratives to take on epic, inchoate, and cryptic meanings that continue to be deciphered to this day. Punch lines occur as frequently as romantic declarations, all delivered with salient references, traditional parallels, and elusive interpretations on par with those of Shakespeare. ''Visions of Johanna.'' ''I Want You. '' Rainy Day Women #12 & 35.'' ''Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.'' ''Absolutely Sweet Marie.'' We could go on. ''Essential'' doesn't even begin to cover the genius of this record that, now, sounds better than Dylan himself can imagine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite simply the Greatest Album of all-time. 28 Oct 1999
Format:Audio CD
Out of all the great records released in the 1960's it is this one that to me stands alone ahead of the field, the feeling that i get when i listen to this album is a feeling i get with no other record, only 'Highway 61 revisited' comes close. Dylan himself said that the sound of Blonde on Blonde was the closest he ever got to the sound he had in his head, explanation enough for the other worldly quality of this music. The 14 songs on this album are faultless my favourites being the seductive melodies of "I Want You" and "Just like a Women" The joyus jamming of "Rainy Day Women" and "Most Likely You Go Your Way" The Chicago blues feel of Leopard-Skin-Pillow-Box Hat (Dylan would never be this care-free again), "Stuck Inside of Mobile" has an irresistable chorus and "Visions of Johanna" and "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands" have an unearthly beauty which Dylan sings wonderfully. I cannot recommend this album highly enough it is the work of a true genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heres something that will keep you thinking... 22 Jun 2001
Format:Audio CD
This album is Dylan at is very best. A mystical journey through love and life, expressed with a soft tingly metal sound that soothes its listeners with mind catching melodies. Dylan, unusually, was not protesting, he was expressing his confusion of women, his love and hate of them and how they made him feel. However, Just as the love/pain songs seem to much for him Dylan remembers the high times, such as 'Rainy day Woman', a song full of laughter and irony and the stranger times such as those in 'Leapord skin pill box hat'. As far as progressive sixties albums go, this has it all. Blonde on Blonde is ten years ahead of its self, Dylan is in his poetic prime, (as 'Visions of Johana' and 'Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands' show) alongside his good friends, love, and erm... his harmonica, and what a world it must be. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolutely Sweet Masterpiece 30 July 2006
Format:Audio CD
Seldom out of the top 5 of those never-ending `All Time Best Album' polls, Dylan's 1966 opus is, by any criteria, nothing short of a masterpiece. Originally a double album, one of rock music's first, on CD the seamless flow of the 14 tracks only enhances the listening pleasure. Sony's latest issue of this all-time classic has benefited from a new remix from the original masters by Steve Berkowitz, making this the best audio version of the album available (the original CDs were pressed from very low quality off-master copies, and notoriously had brutal edits cutting short many of the songs), although what is Blonde On Blonde's standout track for many people, the Neal Cassady-inspired `Visions Of Johanna', still suffers from out-of-tune lead guitar breaks towards the end (although these have been watered-down and are not as prominent as on other releases). For the recording of this album, Dylan relocated from his favoured New York studios to Nashville, after the earlier sessions had proven problematic - only `One Of Us Must Know' from New York made the final cut - and had the benefit of the top session men of the day at his disposal, such as Charlie McCoy and Kenny Buttrey, although `One Of Us...' has a stunning piano track from Paul Griffin that makes one lament the fact that Dylan left the keyboardist behind when he left for Tennessee for the first session on Valentine's Day 1966. Of the songs themselves, there is nothing remotely approaching a `protest' song here - if one discounts Dylan protesting at not getting any from the lady in `Fourth Time Around' - and anyone seeking `Masters Of War' Dylan is on the wrong record, but all the numbers here are dressed in the beautiful kaleidoscopic wordplay of prime mid-sixties Dylan. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Defining Work 12 Dec 2000
Format:Audio CD
Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde was, is and always will be his defining work. Blood on The Tracks and Highway 61 will always be fondly remembered by the faithful, for their up-tempo down-beated-ness, something that only Dylan managed to achieve, and there are better songs written by Dylan that are not on this album - 'Simple Twist of Fate', 'All Along the Watchtower' and 'Like a Rolling Stone' spring immediately to mind.
Blonde On Blonde is remarkable in its creativity, each song interwoven with the next. It has attitude, it has zaniness, it has the remarkable portrait of Sad Eyed Lady, and the wonderfully sad circus of 'I Want You' - 'the guilty undertaker', 'the lonesome organ-grinder', and 'drunken politician'. Wonderful honky-tonk in 'Most likely you'll go your way and I'll go mine' follows the tragic 'Just Like a Woman', and the wild, weird and wonderful Leopard skin Pillbox Hat.
Dylan has had other superb albums - Time out of Mind was superb only insofar as it was the amazing blip on the life support machine, when he had long since flat-lined. Highway 61 and Blood on the Tracks I've already mentioned. It doesn't seem to have generated any major resurgence, and his live act for its 'niceness' remains as unremarkable as the 'hood' phase that seemed to upset everyone so.
I suppose in some ways, we all thought that the music that was changed by the bike accident of '66 could have returned through the heart attack of '97, but while a new Bob Dylan emerged from each life-threatening incident, he would never write another Blonde on Blonde. If you have a collection, you must have Dylan; if you have Dylan, you must have Blonde on Blonde.
