Short Review:

A simple, short guide to setting up a blog and building an audience in Social Media.

Recommendation: If you're (very) new to Social Media Marketing then buy it. If you've been engaging in Social Media Marketing for even a little while, you won't learn a great deal.

Longer Review:

This book disappointed and surprised me.

I am a fan of Jeff Bullas and his excellent blog. I've read many of his blog posts and found them really useful.

So, when he announced he'd got a book coming out, I pre-ordered a copy and waited in anticipation. In anticipation of what precisely? Well, something even better than the stuff I read on his blog. Unfortunately, that's not been the case with this book.

As a guide to blogging and Social Media Marketing, it's OK. It's a simple, easy-to-read introductory book I guess. And if you're just starting out on this road, then you'll probably take a few pointers here and there.

The problem for me is that I didn't learn a great deal. I'm difficult to please I know. But I really didn't come across anything in the book that I'd not already explored myself, read about on the web, or discovered via another book (I do have lots of this type of material).

Thus, for a book to have any value, it has to give me something - at least one core idea - that I didn't have before. This book didn't.

A key problem for me, is that the book reads (IMHO) as a series of blog posts. Maybe this was deliberate. Or maybe it's the style that Jeff Bullas is so used to writing in? Either way, I didn't enjoy the very short chapters that just didn't seem to hang together at all. Indeed, if you read the book right through (I tend to force myself to when I've paid for a book) there's lots of repetition.

In conclusion, if you're a Web Marketing Newbie then this will definitely get you going and set you off in the right direction. But if you're an experienced old-hand, then save your time and money. Indeed, with this material, you'd be better off simply reading Jeff's blog!

I found Jeff's book to be a very readable and practical introduction to the world of blogging. It is certainly aimed more at the newer blogger as the previous reviewer suggested - and it provides a comprehensive overview at that level.

For the more experienced blogger it offers the opportunity to reassess best practice and gives some excellent food for thought.

I think the most useful thing this book offered for me personally was suggestions on how to use social networks such as YouTube, Facebook and Slideshare to grow your blog traffic. As someone who has relied heavily on Twitter alone in the past, the ideas included here about incorporating other channels into the mix are most welcome.
