HASH(0x993c2294) out of 5 stars mixed components 28 Mar. 2015
By Kirk List - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The tempi are quicker than some such as Munchinger, Forster and Dorati, ca. 100 minutes rather than 109. The recent Haitink BR set contains similar tempi, but I find them slightly more comfortable than Marriner's. Among the Marriner soloists I admire most the lovely Gabriel of Barbara Bonney who is truly a peer of such Gabriels
as Donath, Popp, Battle, Burrowes and Ameling without displacing the indispensable Elisabeth Grummer,
Olaf Bar is also quite eloquent as Adam, and Hans Peter Blochwitz is an impressive Uriel. Less impressive
I think are Edith Wiens whose Eve I find thin-voiced and unattractive, and Jan Hendrick Rootering whose voice
sounds wooly c.f the Raphaels of Gottlob Frick and Kurt Moll and Tom Krause. Marriner's tempi are sufficiently brisk but
more charm would help.
Best Creations I think are those of Levine, Jochum, Kubelik, Haitink, and Munchinger but one should
audition Karl Forster's version on Electrols/EMI to hear the wondrous Gabriel of Elisabeth Grummer.
