Great historical performance of Bloch's masterpiece,
By
This review is from: Bloch-Sacred Service; Schelomo (Audio CD)
Composed in 1930-33 and first performed in 1934 as a response to the increasingly troubled history of the Jewish people, and surprisingly premiered in Fascist Italy, Bloch's deeply moving epic choral message of peace, justice and the brotherhood of man has a universal message. The Sacred Service was first performed in the UK in 1938 when G D Cunningham conducted the City of Birmingham SO with Roy Henderson as the soloist. The idiom is not unlike that of biblical Hollywood epics of a later period, but I do not regard this as a criticism. This music might also appeal to admirers of the choral works of Vaughan Williams. There are more modern recordings by Geoffrey Simon on Chandos and Leonard Bernstein on Sony and others but Bloch's 1950 recording has an urgency and power unlike any other. Zara Nelsova's "Schelomo"is equally desirable, making this an essential CD purchase for admirers of this underrated composer.

Greatest piece of Jewish Music =s Handel's Messiah,
By Charles F. Adams "Davidsson" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Bloch-Sacred Service; Schelomo (Audio CD)
This is a great recording of one of the greatest pieces of religious music, not just for Jews but for Christians alike. Only one recording better: Bernstein's classic recording on vinyl with his New York Symphony and the late great Leonard Warren, sadly not available on CD, (so far as I know). (Pray for Bernstein's CD availability, then demand it, from the powers that be!) [Yes, this recording is a little better than the South African recording, I have all three!]

Suprise! It's in English,
By M. Eisenstein "teacher" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Bloch-Sacred Service; Schelomo (Audio CD)
Bloch's beautiful Sacred Service is rendered in English which is fine if that is what you wanted (there was no warning). The performance is a little slow and soupy, but competent. Excellent solo work.
