Bloch's moving Israel Symphony was composed between 1912-16 and is one of his most impressive works. True, there are resonances of Hollywood, biblical epic scores of a later period but this has never been a problem for me. The ASV recording is first rate as is the performance under Dalia Atlas. The old Vanguard Abravanel/Utah performance was also excellent but the colourful music cries out for a modern recording. The Suite for Viola and Orchestra from 1919 is an added bonus (it was originally scored for viola and piano). The notes are informative and this is altogether an impressive issue that should give much pleasure.
If you like epic film scores and fancy something different (and greater in my view) this is for you!
