Amazon.co.uk Review

Diablo is a fantasy role-playing game that captures the spirit of original face-to-face games like Dungeons and Dragons. With a straightforward story line based on fulfilling quests assigned by non-player characters, you equip yourself, venture into a dungeon and slaughter legions of hideous foes. Along the way, you unearth magical treasure, discover mighty spells and earn experience that can be used to increase your combat abilities.

Almost all of your time with Diablo is spent underground, exploring and conquering ever-deeper levels of the gloomy dungeon. Combat is fast, brutal and constant. Whether your weapon of choice is a sword, axe, bow or spell, all forms of combat employ a simple two-click system, which is elegant without being simplistic.

Replayability and customisability are Diablo's strong points; the incredible number of options and possibilities--and the fun that can be had experimenting with different strategies--keeps players coming back for more. All the dungeon levels are generated anew each time you draw up a new character and are packed with an entirely different set of textures, features, items, traps, creatures and quests. While one game may stock the fifth subterranean level with an army of skeleton warriors, the next game may pack that level with hordes of winged gargoyles. Multiplayer options exist for two to four players, so you don't have to take on the world by yourself unless you prefer solo play.

Released in 1997, this game is far simpler than newer titles that have expanded on its original concepts; there are only three character classes and a limited number of ways to truly distinguish your character from others. But sometimes there is no beating a classic. Three years old and with a sequel due in mid-2000, the original Diablo has aged remarkably well. Many of its features will seem familiar to seasoned fantasy gamers, just because so many of them have been incorporated into later RPGs.

Players who yearn for uncluttered adventuring and those with older computers will definitely want to check this one out. --Alyx Dellamonica

Diablo is SUPERB! You can play as a Warrior, a Sorcerer or a Rogue and make them really powerful by upgrading their strength, magic, dexterity and vitality and play more than 14 levels of hacking and slashing skeletons, zombies, minotaurs, demons and many more! You can pick up unidentified items; magical items which, after you have identified them, can be incredibly useful or can be awful and worth a measly 1 gold piece. You fight loads of bosses - including the Butcher, the Skeleton King and Diablo himself. You can also learn spells by reading books, and cast them and develop them to make them even stronger. The game itself is split into four different battle arenas: the easiest arena, the Dungeon, then the Catacombs, the Caves and Hell. There are loads and loads of items in this game, tons of quests and huge amounts of bad guys to beat. Everytime you finish the game, all the quests change and the game suddenly turns around. Also, check it out on multi-player - it's even better. A classic.

I eventually bought the game after playing the demo to death and I wasn't disappointed.
The graphics, sounds and game play are just first class and beautifully coded together. There are too many games out there with sexy graphics and sounds that just don't have the gameplay to make a quality gaming experience.
I think this game has the controls just about right also - it is slick without being too complicated and you can play it with just a mouse and a few keys.
As mentioned by a few others, if I have one criticism it is the lack of variety - there is very little in the way of puzzles to entertain the more logically minded and basically you're just wandering around killing things but hey - it is exactly what is says on the box...

DIABLO is probably the most addictive game I have ever played. You buy the game and think to yourself "I'll just play for 10 minutes then I'll do my homework."-Yeah, right! You remember thinking this when it gets to midnight and you are still playing, having told your mum several times that you're using the computer to do you homework and the noises of dying demons is just her imagination! Eventually, after hours of play, you reach the end and you're really chuffed with yourself, then you go back and change players and do it all over again. Not only that, but if you choose the same player and start again, thinking you're ready for it, the entire plot changes and you have just as much fun as before! The range of weapons and armour is also pretty incredible. They range from the basic short sword to the Butcher's meat cleaver, from a leather jerkin to Diablo's own helmet. You wouldn't believe the stress choosing weather or not to drop a magical sword to make room for King Lear's armour can put you under!

This game is immensly fun to play and has a variety of weapons, armour and items available for you to buy, use or sell. there is a selection of 3 classes to choose from, warrior, rouge and Sorcerer. each have drasticly different tactics that should be applied if you want to survive longer that a minute. tactics employed by a worrior for instance, would be sheer folly for a sorcerer to attempt. so the game has depth fun and action, what more could you want?(apart from diablo 2 maybe)
