Book Description

4 Aug 2008
"The Second World War Experience: Blitzkrieg", published in association with the Imperial War Museum, describes the slow spiraling to war: from the forging of peace after the First World War to the wars of Italy, China and Japan in the 1930s. It then goes on to document the dramatic events of 1938-41: from the Munich Crisis in 1938 to the defeat of France, from the retreat at Dunkirk to the sinking of the Bismarck. Rare items of memorabilia sourced from around the world bring the era and events to life as never before. Each volume also includes an audio CD of veterans' first-hand accounts. Memorabilia includes: Order No 1 - the German order to invade Poland which led to the British declaration of war against Germany; The fake passport used by Sub-Lieutenant Heinz Kummer of the Graf Spee to flee back to Germany following the Battle of the River Plate; and, Montgomery's personal diary charting the events of the evacuation from Dunkirk.

5.0 out of 5 stars superlative 22 Sep 2008
This book is something very special indeed. What sets it apart from other history books is its use of primary sources from the time. I had read about Chamberlain's Munich agreement and 'peace in our time' speech countless times, but this book enables you to able to pull a replica of the agreement out of a pouch and examine it for yourself. This genuinely brings history to life in a new and dynamic way. Other pull outs include copies of 10,000,000 Reich Mark notes from the 1920s and a map of the English Channel detailing 'Operation Sealion' - the planned naval invasion of Britain. This rich visual treat is accompanied by a rational, objective stance by the authors. Key events such as Appeasement and the Treaty of Non-aggression between Germany and Russia are discussed with a remarkable balance of hindsight and empathy. Congratulations to all involved and roll on volume II!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book of History 22 Mar 2011
By Grandjete - Published on Amazon.com
I have read many, many history books of the Second World War. 900 Days, Stalingrad, Barbarossa, Churchill's six volume History of the Second World War (several times), the Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far, and many others. This is my favorite (with the unfair exception of Churchill's monumental work).

This is an amazing book of history of World War II. It is not a history book, with detailed narratives, and thousands of pages. Rather, it is a book of history itself.

By this, I mean it contains dozens of original documents and manuscripts copied from originals. You can extract the loose documents from pockets as you turn the pages. You can unfold and hold in your hand the Munich Agreement, with the signatures of Adolph Hitler and Neville Chamberlain. The flight log of a British pilot from the Battle of Britain. Winston Churchill's type written notes, complete with his red interlineations, of his "Finest Hour" speech during the lowest phase of the war.

You learn from this that history is not a series of narratives of what happened. It is about what people did, and how, under the most extreme duress.

Winston Churchill's notes are rivetting. Typed by one of his faithful secretaries (on typewriters, we are reminded), we see and learn how he wrote his prose like poetry, in almost a sing-song fashion, with lines measured as if in iambic pentameter. The red interlineations, every one apt and even (in retrospect) necessary, inform us of Churchill's most intense thoughts as he prepared what he knew would be a critical rallying of his people and his government.

This writer considers Winston Churchill one of the titans of the 20th century. If Time Magazine had a cover for "Man of the Century", I would vote for Winston. This volume brings the reader into the history of the times like no other I know.
