The latest installment in the series of novels by Sven Hassel following the 27th Special Duties Panzer Regiment through World War 2. Their regiment is a penal unit, made up of convicted criminals and political undesirables and used for every dirty job on the front by their heartless commanders.
The book opens with the 27th taking part in Hitler's fateful Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. All seems to be going well for the Germans until 'General Winter', the snows and bitter cold of the Russian winter slow and finally stops their advance within sight of Moscow. In the midst of the killer cold and desperate Russian counter attacks, Sven, Porta, Old Un, Tiny, The Legionnaire and the rest are sent on a desperate behind enemy lines mission to destroy a tank factory in the Soviet capital.
Readers of the other Sven books will know what to expect already - Nazis, Communists, whores, panzers and gratuitously described violence are the hallmarks of Sven's books and this one is no different.
Highly recommended to anyone who wants to read an enjoyable and very easy to read war story.
