“Brilliant… grips you like a Spitfire’s safety harness and comes to a halt a heartbeat before you’d prefer.”

“Westall captures the real essence of wartime childhood… a sense of excitement – both fearful and fun – of ordinary life lived at the edge of danger.”

From the Back Cover

Four stories of wartime childhood, read by James Bolam and Susan Jameson.

A mysterious air-raid shelter . . .
A plane crash under fire . . .
A secret operation . . .
A noise in the attic

The four stories featured on this tape explore the effects of World War II on the lives of ordinary people, especially children.

All the startling facts are from Robert Westall's own experience, or well-documented accounts of the time. Written especially for audio just before the author's death, this is a welcome return for this unique collection of powerful stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of his best 23 July 2011
Format:Paperback
As a fan of Westall I'm surprised I've never come across this before. It's 4 (very) short stories with the Blitz as a theme. They do read like episodes either from his own life or stories told to him, and it's a shame they're so short as two had just got interesting when they finished abruptly and not very satisfactorily. "The Thing upstairs" is about desertion but not seemingly the consequences or retribution of such an act, and "Rosie" is a ghost story which would have made a very good, longer story in keeping with some of his other ghost stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars you are way off! 25 July 2007
Format:Paperback
responding to the previous reviewer, while this isnt the best of Westall's books,he is so good that anything he has written compares with the best children's authors! my children loved them, and i have given them to other children too. Sad that he is not better known as they also have genuine historical value, while written from a childs perspective.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not exactly wonderfull.... 2 Sep 2000

Format:Paperback
I'm not too sure about this book, the plot is complex and the language is strange. I wouldn't recomend it at all for younger readers. Sorry Robert...
