Review

This is the story of two monks, in the UK, who set out to walk through the countryside in the South of England. They only have their robes and alms bowls and they rely completely on the compassion and generosity of those they meet along the way. Based on real experiences, this story shows how relevant a 2,500 year old tradition can be today. One doesn't have to be particularly interested in Buddhism to enjoy reading this book, it can be enjoyed by anyone, but one cannot fail to feel empowered by the various lessons in life and humanity that reach the reader through this book. A thoroughly good read suitable for all ages I enjoyed reading this immensely --Amazon review

Blistered Feet Blissful Mind may act as an ideal key-text for teachers and students of Religious Education; each chapter would make a useful theme or accompaniment for an RE lessons, at GCSE through to degree level. The book would sit well alongside GCSE syllabuses as its exploration of Buddhism, meditation and faith is uniquely contextualised by a Buddhist monk, within the contemporary world. It could also be a beneficial learning tool for the student in further or higher education as it offers great insight, and opportunity for greater in-depth analysis, into Theravada Buddhism s actions, values and beliefs. This book should be in every school, college and university library- the living essence of Buddhism has never been explained so clearly in a modern work. --Educational review

I do not normally write reviews and this is the first one I have written on Amazon. Each of Mitch Alboms books came close as the take you on such a great journey. But for me, who is relatively new to Buddhism, this book pips my favourite; The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Each chapter is concise and only a few pages long, just enough to get the message across. The message which it highlights allowed me to put myself in their situation and question how I would react allowing for me to get immersed in to the story with clarity and imagination. I fully recommend anyone who likes Mitch Albom books or has an interest in philosophy, religion or in particular Buddhism to read it, I am sure you will not be disappointed. --Amazon review

Product Description

The story of two Buddhist monks who put their faith to the test and walk across the countryside with nothing but their robes and alms bowls, refusing to touch money. With some wise and often amusing encounters they offer a glimpse into a completely different way of life. Surviving purely at the hands of strangers, welcomed, ignored and sometimes threatened, they touch upon the lives of many, and move the hearts and minds of a few. Illustrated with coloured drawings and based on very real and true experiences gathered over years of direct experience, Woven together into episodes in a young monk s life training with his teacher.

This is an enchanting book consisting of a number of stories based on experience of what it is like to go on 'Tudong', that is, an extended walk through the countryside relying only on the generosity of others for their day to day survival. Each story introduces accounts of the people they meet and with whose lives they intersect.
It is a book that can be read at many levels. It can be a sort of travel book, about the English countryside. At another level it is a courageous account of what it is like to live as embodying a very ancient spiritual tradition in a country where mendicant monks were once part of the English lanscape. at yet another level it is an Education in the application of Buddhist values and principles. It is probably the easiest book ever about Buddhist beliefs and philosophy. It is written in an easy style, and the dialogues are particularly evocative and well written. The best bit is that it is also funny; the monks are serious but often don't take themselves seriously, which is refreshing. Yet it addresses the serious issues of what it is like living a life whose values and way of life run counter to the acquisitive, stressful, society of today where beauty, sexual adventure and money are held up as an ultimate good, and the inner life counts for very little.

Food for the heart 28 Oct 2010
By Jeremy
Format:Paperback
This wonderful book helped me to look at my daily behaviour in a new light. There is no preaching or even moralising however each story gives a very clear message of the value of trust, the generosity of the human spirit and the benifit of laughter. I was very happy that the surplus that is raised from the sale of the book will go to support monks.

Superb 19 Oct 2010
By Purdey2
Format:Paperback
Written by a Buddhist monk, this is an absorbing account of how he and a fellow monk travelled in southern England on tudong - without touching money and with nothing but a bowl into which passers-by might (or might not) place some food for the day. Readable, enjoyable and informative.
