1924-1927 - Arthur Watts.
Arthur Watts studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. Later he travelled to Antwerp, Paris, Moscow and Madrid to further his studies. Watts was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in the First World War. He contributed illustrations to Punch, Pearson's Magazine, Pear's Annual, The Bystander and Radio Times in addition to illustrations for a number of books. Watts often drew views from an unusual overhead angle and his figures were sometimes somewhat elongated.
Arthur Watts (also known by the name Arthur George Watts), born1883 in Chatham, Kent, died 1935. Poster designs for the Underground Group 1924-1927.
The Underground range has been created by designspark for BlissHome with the kind permission of Transport for London. It is inspired by a rich archive of British public art and design.
During the 1920's and 1930's the Underground Group's posters reached a peak stylistic quality. By 1933, when London Transport was formed, the company was regarded as a leading patron of the arts. Designing a poster for the Underground and London Transport became an honour among both great and aspiring artists. In the interwar years more artists and designers produced posters for them than for any other single company or organisation.
