5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful beautiful read!, 29 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Bought by chance in a charity shop,it took me a while to get round to read The Blindfold....... Once started I could not put it down! just the book for me, nothing boring about it, not the narrative, characters or the seemingly aphazard chapters, topsy turvy, yet such an excellent picture, account of a person's innards...... the shadowy side of relationships with the whole of life...... I have fallen deeply in love with Siri Hustvedt and will devour all her writings as of now!!! Do the same!!! dead easy to read as well as the language is really everyday....... it's the content that grabs you..... long live good writers! Definitely 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars You had us all fooled Mr Auster...., 10 Jul 2003

Great book. It has so much in common with her husband's New York Trilogy. A set of short stories all with a common theme of pretending to be somebody else. Five stars all the way.

In fact I have a theory that this book was written by Paul Auster. It fits in with the other stories and the idea of the author getting in on the act by pretending to be somebody else has a certain symmetry to it. I remember two particular parts of the book - one where the author hears her (his?) name being called out and somewhere else where the author hears the name Paul called out. Is this the vital clue?

If my first theory's wrong then I have a second, that Siri Hustvedt wrote the New York Trilogy!

See what you think, but go for the NYT first.

On the negative side, the covers that this book come in sometimes don't do it any favours. My version has a cover that makes it look like a piece of Brigitte Jones chick lit, which it definitely isn't.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yes, He Is My Husband, 26 Jan 2008
By Ford Ka (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews

Yes, Paul Auster is married to Siri Huvstedt. Is this reason enough to read her first novel? Not really, even if some elements (the heroine's name is an anagram of that of the author but there is more of Auster here one can take on an empty stomach) ring eerily familiar (pun intended) the effect doesn't come up to anything Auster wrote.
The book smells of pretence and artificiality, Huvstedt doesn't really try to make it work, pursuing an agenda of her own which is rather difficult to pin down and doesn't seem worth the necessary effort. The main impression I got was that of triviality. Just to give you an example - Iris, the main heroine, finds herself in dire financial straits, almost starves to death, and the only possible solution is... a call to her parents who immediately set things right.
Actually, it seems that all Iris' adventures happened because she never had the time to call her parents and talk to someone adult. And this is one more element in which Iris and Siri are similar - some adult reader (not her husband!) should have looked at manuscript and suggest writing something else. Huvstedt can write but publishing this book was not her brightest decision.
