Product Description

Product Description

On the Face of it, househusband Joe Wynde has it all – apart from his sight. Robbed of 90% of his vision by a degenerative eye disorder, Joe’s goals, are simple: to raise his two sassy daughters properly while avoiding close physical contact with street furniture and bored banker’s wives.

Compared to the lifestyles of his wealthy neighbours this may seem unglamorous, but with financial crisis rocking the city, some of them are going to discover just how exposed they are.

When Joe is falsely accused of driving a fellow stay-at-home dad to suicide, he turns to unrequited old flame Miranda Letherbridge for support. A journalist with a keen nose for local gossip, she smells a conspiracy, which draws them into a web of illicit affairs blackmail amidst London’s wealthy elite.

A racket others will protect at all costs.

Blind Trust is a slow-burning thriller providing a unique insight into the world of those deprived of their major sense, while casting a wry glance at the nature of wealth.

I almost feel ashamed to admit that I didn't actually buy this book but was given a copy by my sister who was in turn given it by someone else - she has a huge stack of books to read and knew she wouldn't get to it for a while, and also knows that I like a good thriller...

...and 'Blind Trust' is more than a 'good' thriller - it's excellent! Quite hard to believe that it's a first novel, in fact - it grips from the first word to the last and moves along at a cracking but natural pace. The characters are vividly and succinctly described so that you easily and quickly build up a mental image of each of them and their surroundings. My personal 'test' of how I rate a story is whether or not I can imagine it on a TV screen in my head - this one is almost crying out to be televised in my opinion, it would make a cracking drama series if handled properly. TV Execs please note!

I may have to purchase my own copy of this, or my sister will never get to read it... and I do hope there will be a sequel. If not with Joe (although I like him a lot as a character - he's flawed, and that is always interesting!) then perhaps another visually impaired character. 'They' do say that you should write about what you know, but 'Blind Trust' is a lot more than that; it's an all-too-realistic depiction of the darker side of human nature, softened by the truth that there are more good people than bad out there - thank goodness.

A fabulous read, in conclusion - can thoroughly recommend.

I really enjoyed this book - as many people have already said, it grabs you and I couldn't wait to get back to it in the evening. The characters are true and deep enough and some of the descriptions were laugh-out funny. I hoped straight away that Joe would come back soon and go on elucidating mysteries, so I'm looking forward to his next challenge!

A fantastic read. 20 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
I picked this book up and really struggled to put it down again.
The plot builds at just the right pace and is intricately laced with real life situations. A well written thriller that grips you by not giving away the key points of the plot too soon nor keeping them hidden too long.
The protagonist Joe is the kind of person you could walk past on the street or bump into the pub, at times you feel like Joe is an old friend and Szell uses such a well written character to open the door onto the real life challenges of living with a sight disorder, but at no time does the narrative descend into an exercise of self-pity.
An excellent book to lose yourself in and I thoroughly recommend it.
