Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Short-lived classic rock supergroup Blind Faith's sole 1969 album has aged remarkably well. Blind Faith fused the psychedelic blues of Eric Clapton and the soulful vocals and keyboards of Steve Winwood with the polyrhythmic, Afrocentric leanings of drummer Ginger Baker. "Can't Find My Way Home" is easily one of the hippie era's most lyrically poignant, sonically subtle tunes. The record has a lot of surprises; "Presence Of The Lord" is rousing and melancholy at the same time, while the way the bass and guitar double-team on the introductory melodic line to "Had To Cry Today" makes a hard rock cliché fresh again. The 10-minute drum solo on "Do What You Like" is pretty good as 10-minute drum solos go; Blind Faith is not a purchase for the jam-shy, especially in its present, bloated form, which adds almost an hour-and-a-half of unreleased jams and mixes. And while surely there are levitational moments within the five 12- to16-minute improv sections included here, the excess (and lack of great material; remember that this band was only together a few months) grows tiresome. One notable exception is the "Change of Address Jam", excerpts from which were pressed up as a record label change-of-address announcement back in the day. It's got a pleasant, near-swinging, Graham Bond/Booker T on Quaaludes vibe with Winwood's keyboards rollicking nicely in a manner recalling his work on Electric Ladyland. The rest of disc two is for completists only. --Mike McGonigal

Perhaps it is a bit heavy to describe them as "doomed", but realistically there was no way Blind Faith could ever have lived up to the expectations of Cream fans (not to mention Traffic and Family fans!). The songs from the original album, with the acknowledged exception of the rambling "Do What You Like", actually showcase a flexible and innovative unit which, given time and a little breathing space, could have gone on to even better things. "Had to Cry Today" features brilliant guitar interplay between Eric and Steve - this sort of thing was more or less expected at the time, but rarely was it achieved with such finesse. "Can't Find My Way Home" is just a timeless classic; along with "Presence of the Lord" this shows just what Blind Faith were capable of: beautiful, heartfelt songs with real feeling and power to spare. The previously unreleased stuff (mostly extended jams and alternate takes as the titles would suggest) are sufficeently interesting to warrant buying this version - but its unlikely you will want to play them as often as the prime cuts from the original album.

The original album is classic piece of music.
Here you have the musicians doing their own thing, away from the 'expected performance deal' with their previous big name groups.
To read some reviews here saying all the extra rambling studio loose jams are a 1 listen thing, is daft in my opinion.
Maybe because im a guitarist,or maybe not?..id say i LOVE all the extra tracks on this 2 cd set.
Its like many of my various bootlegs of studio stuff ive collected over the years, its great to hear musical idols going through stuff, feeling out bits, generally seeing how ideas go.
If they dont release them, or dont feel its going to make it to this release(only one sadly)then youve got an extra piece of of 'mostly unheard' history here by putting on the jams.
Well worth getting this 2 cd set.

Blind Faith CD 14 Jun 2009

Really what is there to say! The first so called Supergroup - Blind Faith were together for so short a time. Everyone focussed on Clapton but it was Stevie Winwood who was the real genius and talent - he of the golden voice. This was a great concert with superb songs at the turning of the 60s into the 70s. They were very original and daring until Hendrix came along and blew them out of the water! Listen to the 2 versions of 'Can't Find My Way Home'.
