A great movie,
By A Customer
This review is from: Blind Beast [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
There is no doubt that this is a great movie. It is romantic and upsetting at the same time. The end is quite strong and almost slightly sickening, but it's all done very artistically. It is not a simple and cheap sado-maso movie. This movie analyses the peoples' passion and sense of love, and only the last few minutes turn this play into a sado-maso movie. I can really recommend watching it, as it's scenes are great, also from a photographic point of view.

Bump and Grind,
By
This review is from: Blind Beast [DVD] (DVD)
Masumara leers into the darkness of lust and wild abandon coupling it with need, desire and malformed childhoods. The setting is a large factory composed of "sculptures". The story is about the psychological need to feel something, anything to exist.
The film is uniquely Japanese in its willingness to portray loneliness, need and lust. It moves forward at a Masumara slow grind to the eventual conclusion. Another milestone for Japanese sensibility, exploring the potholes of the human psyche. It is slow ponderous and some people will be bored before before they become disturbed. Certainly the ending is not predictable from the beginning unless you have intimate knowledge of Masumara. The exploration of issues relating to the sexual needs of people who have disabilities, the power of eroticism, the potential stifling nature of mother/son relationships and the role of art. There are holes in the film, unexplained events but this is primarily an allegory rather than reality. Red Knight concerns the real, this moves somewhere else.

Not an eye opener,
By Dom Vlad Malic (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blind Beast [DVD] (DVD)
The plot is very simple and in some ways the outcome is similar to Oshima's 'Ai no Korda' (In the Realm of the Senses). It has been fairly well put together but as a story, not very engaging or enlightening. It's not particularly strong horror and cannot be considered to be an erotic thriller.
