Biography

RAHSAAN PATTERSON
BLEUPHORIA

The passage above plays in a loop in my head as I wait for Rahsaan Patterson (Rah to his friends) to arrive at Casbah, the Moroccan-themed café where we’re meeting to talk about bleuphoria, his latest CD. That potent snatch of lyrics sums up both the high-wire aesthetics of the new disc and Rahsaan’s approach to his entire career (itself ... Read more in Amazon's Rahsaan Patterson Store

Product Description

CD Description

"Bleuphoria" marks a stunning return to form for one of the pre-eminent modern soul singers, featuring background vocal guests such as Jody Watley, Faith Evans, Lalah Hathaway, Shanice and the Andrea Crouch Singers.

A remarkably strong fifth solo album from a soul singer who defines the word classy.

4.0 out of 5 stars His boldest and most scattered album to date. 26 July 2011
Format:Audio CD
Rahsaan Patterson's first proper studio release in nearly four years is his boldest and most scattered album to date, which -- in the wake of "Wines & Spirits" -- is saying something.
It could not get much more daring than a drastic, uptempo overhaul of "I Only Have Eyes for You", with Patterson performing all the vocal parts over slippery drum programming, synthesizer bass, strings, and horns. And that is what opens the album.
The following three songs, boasting assists from Jody Watley, Faith Evans, and Shanice Wilson, are among Patterson's funkiest and friskiest work, while the overjoyed "Stay with Me" is trailed by "Miss You" -- mostly finger snaps and aching falsetto -- and the sorrowful yet somewhat sweet "Goodbye", a touching seven-minute ballad.
The album's second half is highlighted by two tremendously disparate numbers.
The love hangover "6AM", featuring Lalah Hathaway, is an irresistibly liquid but bumping groove reminiscent of Nick Martinelli's mid-'80s productions with Loose Ends and Regina Belle (among many others).
"Mountain Top", however, is a large gospel number, beginning with Patterson at ground level and escalating as he is joined by Tata Vega, Andraé Crouch, and the Andraé Crouch Singers. It sounds as if Patterson has never had more fun making music, indulging in his whims.
It's too bad he can't do it more often. Andy Kellman

Favourite tracks: "Easier Said Than Done", "Stay With Me", "Mountain Top" and "AM".

4.0 out of 5 stars Rahsaan Patterson at his best 10 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD
Rahsaan Patterson's new album "Bleuphoria" is a fantastic piece of work with great variety and soul. If you are to include his recent seasonal album "His Gift", this is his sixth studio album and by far his best to date. The songs are slick and exciting with not one exception, which is very rare for a modern soul/R&B album.

"I Only Have Eyes For You" is the best song he has recorded so far in his career and is a wonderfully infectious soulful pop tune with an addictive chorus. "Ghost" is a superb fast paced funk tune, baring some similarities to Michael Jackson's most famous material from "Thriller". "Easier Said Than Done" is another great funk tune with a stomping bass line, this time reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's "Innervisions". "Goodbye" is a really beautifully arranged soulful ballad that slowly builds into a lovely anthemic tune. "Mountain Top", the second best track of his career, has a beautifully inspiring gospel theme, and is centred around the wonderful vocals and choir. "Insomnia" starts off timidly, but then builds into an excellent rock influenced modern pop tune.

The other tracks are nearly as strong and deserve their place on this release. "Crazy", a slightly more experimental and urban sounding funk track, features Faith Evans on guest vocals. "Stay With Me" and "Makin' Love" are pleasant mid-tempo R&B tinged pop tracks whilst "Miss You" is a quiet slow jam/ballad with simple yet effective arrangements. "6 AM" is a cool pure R&B joint co-written with and featuring the talented Lalah Hathaway. "God" is an atmospheric R&B tune and closes the album very nicely indeed.

I am very impressed and pleasantly surprised by the quality of "Bleuphoria", an album that shows us just how talented and diverse an artist Rahsaan Patterson really is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Takes a while but great CD 19 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
A great CD which took me a while to get into and will appeal to the more modern sounding audiences. People expecting the rawness of albums like "Love In Stereo" and "After Hours" may be dissapointed.
To start some very instant tracks that have great hooks like "Easier Said than Done", "6AM" and "Ghost" and others that take a while to appreciate like "Goodbye", "Bluephoria" and "God". Its an album that you need to have patience with to appreciate the finer details. Here we have a true artist who is exploring the boundaries of style, technology and even form in the cases of "Bluephoria" and "God" which are more textures of melody and vocal harmony than straight songs. The production is spot on for the majority and Rahsaan sounds great and alot more relaxed than on "Wines & Spirits". The only dull point for me is "Crazy (Baby)" which sounds a bit to commercial for my liking and seems a waste for the talents of Faith Evans and Shanice. The high points for me are many, but I really love "Insomnia" which is a RNB/Rock sounding number reminiscent of late 90's Michael Jackson and "Makin Love" which warps from an RnB digitised groover into a sensual, downtempo feel. Overall a great CD that i'll be listening to for a while along with the other albums by this great singer/songwriter. CC
Overall a great album
